Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women #VAW, the Inter-Parliamentary Union and partner organizations are hosting a virtual roundtable to discuss strategies and tools to support women in public life against gender-based violence, online and offline. With just 27% #WomenMPs in office globally, and less than 1 /4 parliamentary chambers chaired by women, #politics remains a male bastion in 2024, and #GBV is one of the key obstacles to women's equal and full participation. The #IPU and partners are organizing this roundtable in the context of the WYDE | Women’s Leadership project "Advancing Women's Political Participation and Decision-Making through Social Norms Change, Networking and Global Advocacy". We aim to bolster partnerships amongst women leaders and advise on new tools tailored to the needs of women #MPs. Info
The IPU is the global organization of national parliaments. It was founded in 1889 as the first multilateral political organization in the world, encouraging cooperation and dialogue between all nations. Today, the IPU comprises 179 national Member Parliaments and 13 regional parliamentary bodies. It promotes democracy and helps parliaments become stronger, younger, gender-balanced and more diverse. It also defends the human rights of parliamentarians through a dedicated committee made up of MPs from around the world. Twice a year, the IPU convenes over 1,500 parliamentary delegates and partners in a world assembly, bringing a parliamentary dimension to global governance, including the work of the United Nations and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In 2024, #politics remains a male bastion. Across the globe, only 27% of members of parliament are #WomenMPs and less than 1 in 4 parliamentary chambers is chaired by a woman. What has been steady progress, is now slowing down. By 1 October 2024, the percentage of seats held by women in national #parliaments had progressed by only 0.1 point since the start of this so-called “super election” year. How can parliaments and other stakeholders step up their action to prevent and eliminate all forms of gender-based violence offline and online, including violence generated or facilitated by #AI? What effective strategies and synergies are needed to build a sexism-free, violence-free public space? What targeted support and tools can be made available to women themselves in politics to counter the sexism and gender-based violence they face? Marking November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of #VAW, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, UN Women, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Council of the European Union and International IDEA are hosting a roundtable to discuss strategies and tools to support women in public life against #GBV online and offline. #16days More info ➡️ipu.org/GBV24

As we approach 25 November and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Inter-Parliamentary Union is pausing to reflect on the issues facing #WomenMPs and ongoing concerns around gender-based violence. The #IPU published its annual report, Women in Parliament in 2023, which uncovered some worrying truths as women left the political arena, citing burn-out and threats to both themselves and their families. A recent IPU Long Read shares three case studies detailing 2023 election outcomes and women's political inclusion in #Poland, #SierraLeone, and #Ecuador. ipu.org/gbv23 #GBV #VAW

Governments were sent a strong message delivered by 300+ #MPs attending #IPU and Milli Majlis' Parliamentary Meeting at #COP29 - more must be done "to invest in accelerating the transition to clean, in particular renewable, #energy”. In a year marked by record heatwaves, intense storms, and devasting floods, the meeting drew parliamentarians from over 60 countries, looking for the latest data and scientific facts, and to exchange updates on parliamentary action to address the climate emergency. With speeches from IPU President Dr. Tulia Ackson, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, and IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong, what else was discussed? Global military spending reached a record high of $2.24 trillion in 2022, whereas spending on conflict prevention is minimal. With security threats from #climatechange, #AI, and ongoing conflicts, the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission sits at the center of the #peace-development nexus. Ahead of the 2025 review of the #UN's peacebuilding activities, #IPU's N.10 Briefing for #MPs will examine the role of the PBC and how it can contribute to a more peaceful world.
