📣New IPIE Summary for Policymakers📣 The IPIE is proud to announce its Recommendations for a Global AI Auditing Framework: https://lnkd.in/dhhnzsRb. The growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into critical sectors of society, from healthcare to education, has the potential to support widespread social transformation and progress. However, AI systems also have the power to perpetuate biases, deepen inequalities, and cause environmental harm. Accurately evaluating the risks and benefits of an AI system requires a careful audit. Current approaches to auditing, however, rarely involve independent auditors, provide sufficient evidence, or account for global impacts. The culmination of 12 months of work by the IPIE’s Scientific Panel on Global Standards for AI Audits, this report explains why a global framework for AI audits must provide: 🔹common standards and procedures, 🔹auditor independence and qualifications, 🔹auditor access to evidence, 🔹 transparent audit results, and 🔹evaluation of AI’s disparate global impacts. Building on previous research conducted by the Panel, this proposed framework for AI audits addresses seven features: 🔹audit scope, 🔹auditor role, 🔹mechanisms for stakeholder engagement, 🔹context-appropriate audit criteria, 🔹evidence requirements, 🔹audit methodologies, and 🔹comprehensive post-audit activities. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗣𝗜𝗘'𝘀 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘀 Policymakers urgently need a comprehensive global framework for AI audits that validates genuine benefits and risks. The IPIE’s Scientific Panel on Global Standards for AI Audits set out to independently establish global, cross-disciplinary scientific consensus on what makes an audit effective and trustworthy. The Panel consisted of 16 experts from computer science, the social sciences, and the humanities, with expertise spanning generative AI systems, algorithmic auditing, indigenous data sovereignty, data journalism, and the relationship between civil society, human rights, and AI. We encourage you to read this Summary for Policymakers and to stay tuned for publication of the full report early next month. #IPIE #AIAuditing #AI #InformationIntegrity

⭐ New IPIE Reports ⭐ The IPIE has been busy this month publishing two new technical reports, which were submitted to the OECD and European Commission in response to upcoming policy guidance related to information integrity and researcher access to data. These submissions emphasize the critical need for transparency and independent research on digital platforms. Among the recommendations is a call for platforms to conduct and publish research using established scientific methods, while also ensuring equitable access for researchers. The IPIE also advocates for greater transparency regarding algorithmic recommendation systems and content moderation processes, as well as stronger protections against disinformation spread by bots and inauthentic accounts. We encourage you to read these short reports: 📘IPIE Submission to the OECD - https://lnkd.in/euCrEXKb 📗IPIE Submission to the European Commission - https://lnkd.in/ezjJhjbG #IPIE #OECD #EuropeanCommission #DigitalServicesAct #InformationIntegrity

What a packed November for the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE)! Looking back on the month I am incredibly grateful to the powerhouse Secretariat team for supporting the global scientific community working on information integrity. For example, Egerton Neto accompanied the science leadership from #WHO Ministerial in Bogotá to #G20 in Rio and affiliate meetings in São Paulo. There is a saying "democracy is an endless meeting". It should also be said "science is an endless meeting" and Alex Young kept our critical planning conversations moving forward. Jasmine McGhee helped us look ahead, laying the groundwork for next year's scientific panels and next year's big ideas. Kathryn Chapman helped us tell the world about our impact and Donna Seymour kept the leadership team flowing smoothly through time and space from #websummit to the #G20. So the IPIE's Panel chairs (Wendy Chun Klaus Jensen Sebastian Valenzuela Selcan Kaynak Fredrick Ogenga Frank Esser), IPIE Trustees (Anna Sjöström Douagi Sheldon Himelfarb John Momoh Howard Rosen CBE), and many Panel members are thankful to our powerful and supportive management team for making our November productive and impactful! https://lnkd.in/efuCv2Qh

This afternoon in Rio the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) takes the stage at the #G20 social forum to discuss the challenge of protecting #informationintegrity about climate science. The IPIE's Panel on Information Integrity about Climate Science, launched at #UNGA and led by Klaus Jensen, is surfacing the best applied research on mitigating the impact of junk news about climate science. I'll be discussing the big climate lies, and how to prevent them from spreading at scale, on stage with some great partners. Our wonderful IPIE Head of Programs Egerton Neto and I are looking forward to advancing the partnerships between public agencies, civil society, scientists and industry that are needed to help everyone understand the latest climate science and the tough policy choices we face now.

🌍 It’s Time to Confront Climate Disinformation: Why COP29 Should Not Ignore a Growing Threat 🌏 As world leaders meet for COP29 this week, there is an urgent issue we can no longer ignore: climate mis and disinformation. Mis and disinformation about climate science have become a growing threat to global climate action. It not only undermines trust in science, but also fuels skepticism and delays crucial action in the fight against climate change. It is imperative that we address this issue head-on, especially in spaces like COP29, where solutions to the climate crisis are being developed. In a statement from the IPIE today, the call is clear: tackling climate mis and disinformation is no longer optional. It is essential for advancing real climate solutions and securing a sustainable future. The IPIE’s Scientific Panel on Information Integrity about Climate Science is helping lead this effort with data-driven insights and recommendations to combat the disinformation ecosystem that undermines climate science. International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) hat dies direkt geteilt
In my capacity as the Chair of the Panel on Child Protection and Social Media at the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE), I can not think of a more inspiring venue to share our work than the First Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children. Yesterday we attended the Satellite Event organized by Safe Online, WeProtect Global Alliance and Brave Movement with support from over 15 expert organizations, one of which is the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE). The event brought many thought provoking and at times hard to take findings to public attention. Children are at risk for harm and this is an urgent and global problem! We must act now, through identifying where the risks are and which policies work. We must keep the issue high on the public agenda. Our project aims to contribute to this cause and we are proud to be part of the community of researchers, civil society organizations and front line workers who work on online child wellbeing. Today is the first day of the main event, leaders and government representatives will be on stage to pledge to end violence against children. The event hall is vibrant with a global community of participants. I am excited to take part in this event and engage in the conversation.
