Programme description The MAS ETH DFAB teaches advanced methods and technologies at the forefront of computational design, 3D printing and robotic fabrication and their implementation in architecture and construction. Throughout the intensive twelve-month programme, students gain the technical, intellectual and artistic skills to master the digital chain from computational design to fabrication and assembly of full-scale structures in architecture. Jointly organised by Gramazio Kohler Research and the Chair for Digital Building Technologies at the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA), the MAS ETH DFAB is the educational programme of the National Centre for Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication, one of the biggest and world leading interdisciplinary research clusters on digital fabrication and robotics in architecture. Objectives The MAS ETH DFAB prepares students for a Digital Building Culture, where the architect develops integrative concepts for design and construction, which are technologically advanced, sustainable and responsive to societal progress. Professional perspectives Expert knowledge in computational design, advanced fabrication methods, robotics and materials research positions graduates as cutting-edge practitioners in the field. The MAS ETH DFAB has regular interactions with representatives from industry and architecture, to prepare them for practice. Alumni of the programme have successfully set up robotic divisions in progressive architecture and construction firms, work as computational design and digital fabrication specialists or have become leading researchers in the field. New job opportunity as Coordinator and tutor of the MAS ETH Architecture and Digital Fabrication at ETH Zürich. As a member of the MAS ETH DFAB teaching team, your role will consists of the curriculum design, comprehensive planning and daily instruction of the 18 students enrolled in the #MAS program. This position is a unique opportunity to creatively investigate and teach new state-of-the-art methods to drive future evolutions of architecture and digital fabrication. The #MASETHDFAB is a one-year, full-time educational programme positioned within a vibrant multidisciplinary research environment, jointly organised by the Digital Building Technologies, ETH Zurich and Gramazio Kohler Research. Seamlessly integrating virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) into AEC workflows enhances visualization, collaboration, and decision-making, leading to improved efficiency, project outcomes, and error reduction. This event features introductions from industry leaders and a deep dive into the latest XR innovations for AEC. It includes insightful sessions by expert speakers from afca. ag, Microsoft, Halter AG, and the Computer Vision and Geometry Group will provide valuable insights, a panel discussion moderated by Fabio Scotto, and a hands-on demo, culminating with an Apero in the Robotic Fabrication Lab. Introducing #caschlatsch, our newest project! Our #MAS students will design a wooden structure entirely with parametric tools and test it using #VR technologies. Both these design tools and the processes for collaborative human-machine assembly are experimental in nature and originate from previous research conducted by #GramazioKohlerResearch. In spring 2024, we will design and fabricate an innovative wooden frame construction that will be manufactured cooperatively by human and machine workers. The project is a collaboration between #GramazioKohlerResearch, stefan m. seydel, Studio UH Architects ETH SIA and Nicolas Fehlmann Ingénieurs Conseils SA, and it will be erected on a forgotten rocky outcrop in Disentis/Mustér above the Lukmanier pass, where the #caschlatsch castle once stood. The design for the structure is being developed entirely with parametric tools by students of the MAS ETH DFAB at ETH Zürich and tested in collaboration with local partners using #VR technologies. Both these design tools and the processes for collaborative human-machine assembly are experimental in nature and originate from previous research conducted by Gramazio Kohler Research. These combine the best of both worlds: the dexterity of artisans with the precision of the robotic arm in positioning in space. Using an #AR interface, the team of human workers retains control of the process and can compare what has been built with the digital model at any time and change or adapt the distribution of tasks between humans and robots.
