🤝 The NCD Policy Lab annual Coordination Meeting in #Geneva – a resounding success! It brought together NCD Policy Lab partners in Geneva for 3 impactful days. Starting with partners update and reporting on their NCD Policy Lab 2024 activities. Followed by Capacity Building activities through the intervention on #UniversalHealthCoverage by Jean-Marc Thomé from P4H Network, with Romaine Jean learning how to communicate a complex message effectively & with Martin Leschhorn Strebel from Medicus Mundi Switzerland learning about key tools to address the challenges of Science to Policy. 🌟 All the partners were able to create meaningful synergies across the NCD Policy Lab main pillars: Research, Capacity Building & Societal Engagement. The discussions were a significant step to advance the mission of the NCD Policy Lab, bridging the gap between #Science and #Policy to promote evidence-based solutions for #NCDs. 🚀 Exciting developments for 2025 are on the horizon—stay tuned for more updates! #NCDPolicyLab #CoordinationMeeting24 University of Geneva, HUG - Hopitaux Universitaires de Genève, NGO Santé Diabète

Two weeks ago: the NCD Policy Lab had the privilege of participating in the Science Fair at Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (KSMA), where the incredible potential of young researchers was on full display ✨ In collaboration with the Health Policy Analysis Center, a microgrant was awarded to support a study on diabetes awareness in #Kyrgyzstan. The findings were striking: a significant lack of knowledge about #diabetes risk factors, coupled with the fact that most individuals only visit their doctor once a year. These insights are essential for improving both prevention and care. 💡 Why is this important? The study underscores the importance of community-driven research in addressing knowledge gaps related to Noncommunicable diseases (#NCDs). It also highlights the role of global initiatives like the Global Diabetes Research Agenda, launched on November 20th, in supporting collaborative efforts to improve health outcomes. Highlights from the KSMA event: 🔹 Opportunities within the NCD Policy Lab for student scientific societies. 🔹 STERN Group's Research: Insights into diabetes awareness. 🔹 Career Perspectives: Shared by David Beran, Assistant Professor at the University of Geneva. 🔹 Awards & Recognition for emerging researchers at the student scientific clubs fair. The NCD Policy Lab is playing a critical role in bridging the gap between #science and policy, creating platforms that integrate research into decision-making. Empowering the next generation of researchers is key to developing sustainable and informed approaches to global health challenges. #KSMA #Kyrgyzstan #Research #Diabetes

🗓️ Yesterday, November 20, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) unveiled its Prioritized Diabetes Research Agenda at PAHO Procurement and Supply Management headquarters in Washington, D.C. This global roadmap aims to shape the future of diabetes research by emphasizing the critical need to turn scientific knowledge into actionable solutions. It was the opportunity for Prof. David Beran to highlight the pivotal role of evidence in diabetes care, stressing the importance of bridging the gap between research and practice. While we know a great deal about diabetes, much work remains to translate this knowledge into effective policies and tangible improvements in care with and urgent need for more research in low- and middle-income countries to address gaps and implement the changes needed to improve diabetes prevention and care. Today, the momentum continues at the regional meeting on diabetes, where discussions will continue on refining care and aligning research priorities for diabetes to pave the way forward 🚀 If you’re eager to dive deeper, don’t miss the newly hot off the virtual press technical report: “The Global Diabetes Compact – Progress in Supporting Its Workstreams“. This report highlights top research priorities, including one of the Top 10: “Determining barriers to access to quality, affordable diabetes medicines and related delivery devices and finding solutions to remove barriers.”—This priority aligns closely with the work of the NCD Policy Lab. The University of Geneva, which, supported by the Geneva Science-Policy Interface (GSPI), contributed to developing this report. 📖 Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/dqKM-Jrm #DiabetesResearch #GlobalHealth #WHO #NCDs

✨ Today is International Children’s Rights Day: Access to Insulin is a Child’s Right On this important day, attention is drawn to a critical issue: the lack of access to insulin for children with type 1 diabetes. Globally, this remains the most common cause of death for these children, representing a severe violation of their fundamental right to life and health. This challenge directly undermines Article 6 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which guarantees every child the inherent right to life and obligates states to ensure their survival and development to the fullest extent possible. A comment by Olivia Heller. et al., published under The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology and titled “Lack of access to insulin: undermining the Rights of the Child”, explores the critical connection between insulin access and children’s rights. This publication reinforces the need to operationalize the right to health, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen global accountability to ensure equitable access to lifesaving insulin for every child. Access to insulin is not a privilege but a fundamental right that must be upheld for all children. 👇 Read the comment here https://lnkd.in/dDrFmknT #ChildRights #AccesstoInsulin #GlobalHealth #Diabetes David Beran, Philip D.
