UNCTAD Ocean Economy and Fisheries
Außenhandel und internationale Entwicklung
Supporting developing countries to sustainably utilise, manage and care for their oceans and the people depending on it.
Info
Oceans and seas cover over two-thirds of the earth's surface, provide food and minerals, generate oxygen, absorb greenhouse gases and keep climate change in check, determine weather patterns and temperatures, and serve as highways for sea-borne international trade. Oceans and seas can play a major role in contributing to achieving sustainable development, economic growth, and livelihoods. UNCTAD is supporting developing countries to identify the opportunities and challenges that the oceans economy can bring. It also supports national trade and other competent authorities to design and create an enabling policy and regulatory environment that promotes the development and emergence of sustainable oceans economic sectors through the definition and implementation of national and regional oceans economy and trade strategies. UNCTAD obtained a new mandate on oceans and seas at the UNCTAD 14 Conference (Paragraph 100(t) of the Nairobi Maafikiano). UNCTAD's Oceans Economy pillars help to implement this mandate to pursue sustainable and inclusive development, in line with SDG14, and technological capacity, innovation, and policy and regulatory coherence in areas within and beyond national jurisdiction.

🐡‼️ I am thrilled to share UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s latest technical note, offering the first ever mapping of ocean-related measures in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). 🌊 Oceans are critical to SIDS - not only as key economic drivers through fisheries, tourism and trade, but also as vital buffers against the devastating impacts of climate change. These countries face disproportionate risks from rising sea levels, extreme weather and ocean degradation, which threaten their livelihoods, ecosystems and even their survival. 🐠 This publication is unique in directly responding to UNCTAD’s action on climate and the SIDS Strategy under the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda (ABBAs). It follows on from UNFCCC COP29 and serves as a key resource as we prepare for the 5th Ocean Forum next year. 🌍 The analysis of 606 ocean measures submitted by SIDS shows a strong focus on adaptation and resilience. However, it also highlights the urgent need for global support - financial, technical and trade-related - to help these nations achieve their ambitious climate goals while protecting their oceans and economies. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is proud to release its latest technical note analysing ocean-related measures in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The report sheds light on: 🌊 The strategies SIDS use to develop sustainable ocean economies and conserve marine ecosystems. 📊 606 ocean measures, with a strong focus on adaptation and resilience to address immediate climate risks. 🌎 Practical recommendations for strengthening the next iteration of NDCs (NDC 3.0), set for 2025. As we prepare for the 2025 UN Ocean Conference, this analysis underscores the importance of global solidarity in addressing the urgent challenges that SIDS face from climate change. A new UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report offers the first-ever mapping of ocean-related measures in the national climate plans of small island developing states (SIDS). 🌊 Oceans are critical to SIDS not only as key economic drivers through fisheries, tourism and trade, but also as vital buffers against the devastating impacts of climate change. These countries face disproportionate risks from rising sea levels, extreme weather and ocean degradation, which threaten their livelihoods, ecosystems and even their survival. 🌍 The analysis of 606 ocean measures submitted by SIDS shows a strong focus on adaptation and resilience. However, it also highlights the urgent need for global support - financial, technical and trade-related - to help these nations achieve their ambitious climate goals while protecting their oceans and economies. 🌍 In Africa, the report shows that São Tomé and Príncipe is among the countries with the largest share of marine fisheries measures. It's also among the countries with the highest share of measures relating to aquaculture and hatcheries in their plans, and its marine fisheries measures focus on adaptation. Small scale fisheries #workshop to outline possible solutions and #READING Technical note: “South-South trade in the marine fisheries and aquaculture sectors”
Yesterday, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), FAO GLOBEFISH and Shanghai Ocean University held a crucial workshop to address the dual challenges facing Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF) - 1) limited market access and 2) sustainability amid overfishing and climate change. During the discussion, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s David Vivas Eugui and Víctor Meseguer Sánchez provided several key takeaways: 📌 Expanding South-South trade offers a growing opportunity for SSF to integrate into global value chains, creating new pathways for market entry. 📌 Reducing tariffs and streamlining non-tariff measures within trade agreements like the Global System of Trade Preferences (GSTP) is essential in boosting SSF’s competitiveness. 📌 Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) is a transformative approach to promoting sustainable, people-centered development in SSF. See https://lnkd.in/d2kWUNTJ As we continue to understand the challenges and opportunities facing SSF, it is clear that collaboration and targeted action will be key to unlocking a more sustainable and inclusive future. ☀️🌎🐠 Chantal Line Carpentier Henrique Pacini Marcio Castro de Souza Maria Durleva Mariana Toussaint Audun Lem, Ph.D. Mele Tauati Tinggui Chen Ludovic Arnaud #SmallScaleFisheries #Sustainability #Aquaculture #SouthSouthTrade #SocialEconomy #TradeBarriers #SSF #OceanActionIsClimateAction

Developing the value from organic residues, an important part of the #bioeconomy, is essential for achieving additional jobs and income with less land use intensity and environmental degradation. Plastics, increasingly viewed as the future of fossil fuels, are dominating global discussions on sustainability and environmental degradation. As one of the leading UN-led conferences on plastic pollution convenes to create an international legally binding international agreement, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) highlights the untapped potential of organic residues in combating plastic pollution and driving sustainable development. UNCTAD has analyzed trade flows under the Global System of Trade Preferences (GSTP), revealing that residues and waste from the food industry rank as the third most traded agricultural product amongst developing countries. This trend highlights their growing importance in South-South trade and their untapped potential to foster a circular economy and advance sustainable development. “Regrettably, organic material and plastics are often mixed, and this lack of separation robs us of value addition opportunities,” says Henrique Pacini, who leads UNCTAD’s work at the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (The SMEP Programme), a strategic partnership between UNCTAD and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (UK-FCDO).
