🌊Congratulations to our 2024 Grantees! After a highly competitive evaluation process undertaken by the GSC Scientific and Strategic Advisory Councils, the Global Seaweed Coalition Leadership Committee gathering our founding partners from UN Global Compact, CNRS and Lloyds Register Foundation made the final selection of projects to be funded under GSC’s 3rd Call for Proposals. · Yunus Thailand will propose a capacity-building approach to unlock the potential of seaweed for the empowerment of low-income coastal communities, particularly women. · Universidad de Los Lagos’s i~mar center in Chile will offer an alternative for kelp biomass utilization, long-term storage and enrichment using ensilage techniques for Macrocystis pyrifera. · ALGOLESKO in France will precisely, rigorously and innovatively measure the biodiversity impact of seaweed cultivation. The results of this study supported by the Station Biologique de Roscoff could accelerate the development of the seaweed sector. · MAVUNOLAB in Tanzania will deploy low-cost solar dryers to small-scale seaweed farmers in Dimani and Nyamanzi villages, Unguja Island leading to safer, reliable, and efficient seaweed processing in Zanzibar. · The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Samoa will place the control of aquatic food systems in the hands of local communities, through facilitating their right to define their own supply chains for local markets and home consumption and addresses the root cause of food and nutrition insecurity. · Kelp Forest Foundation in Namibia will undertake studies to assess cultivated giant kelp’s (Macrocystis sp.) potential at mitigating ocean acidification within a kelp farm and the corresponding effect on calcifying organisms that settle on Kelp Blue’s farm structures. · Ocean-Farmers in Madagascar will develop commercially viable and climate-resilient local strains of Kappaphycus sp. for community aquaculture, in collaboration with academia and the government of Madagascar. · Rézomes will develop a low-tech open-source process capable of transforming seaweed with low added value into safe and accessible organic fertilizers for farming communities in Zanzibar and Madagascar. This third round of funding leads to a total of USD 1.5m for all projects supported by the GSC over 3 years. Selected proposals will join our portfolio of supported projects and contribute to the improvement of safety in the global seaweed sector. Project outcomes will be made publicly available to maximize global impact. Stay tuned! Building a safer seaweed industry!
À propos
The Global Seaweed Coalition is a global partnership supporting a safe and sustainable seaweed industry, led by Lloyd’s Register Foundation, United Nations Global Compact and CNRS, as well as a multi-stakeholders governance. The coalition brings together stakeholders from across the globe and every part of the value chain to unlock the full potential of seaweed. Through an inclusive members-led approach, the coalition facilitates collaboration on safety—for those consuming seaweed products, those working in the industry and for the environment. Through these three pillars of safety, the coalition aims to provide the industry with the resilient foundation it needs to responsibly scale and deliver on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Fully agree, if we want the seaweed aquaculture industry to flourish in Spain, we need the same:
🌊 Licensing for Seaweed Aquaculture In a recent industry meeting led by our partner, Ann Ruddy, CEO at Alga (Seaweed) Ltd. & Redrose Developments Ltd, stakeholders came together to discuss challenges and opportunities within the seaweed aquaculture sector. The focus was on the complex licensing processes that often slow down growth and hinder progress. Recommendations that emerged from the meeting: ➡ Streamlining Licensing: The need for clear timelines, accountability, and centralized coordination was emphasized to simplify the process. ➡ Supporting Community Farming: The formation of producer organizations to offer collective support was highlighted as a way to reduce individual burdens. ➡ Developing Monitoring Tools: Participants stressed the importance of tracking ecological impacts to ensure compliance and demonstrate sustainable practices. ➡ Proving Regenerative Benefits: Using scientific data to attract policy backing and secure funding was identified as crucial for long-term growth. Read the full blog to dive into participants' current licensing experiences, their visions for the future, and the steps needed to turn those visions into reality: https://lnkd.in/gc5NCusd #seaweed #aquaculture #algae #licensing #regenerative

Great, and much needed, initiative by the Global Seaweed Coalition organising this workshop and gathering the thoughts and advice on monitoring biodiversity in seaweed farms from colleagues working on the topic across different latitudes, from the cold to the warm ones. Delighted to being invited to share some of my perspectives and experience over the years. Back in the 2010s when some of us ecologists got involved in seaweed farming projects it was difficult to 'fit in', to explain why we were getting excited to see farms as living ecosystems and habitats, showing photos of invertebrates, fish, or fish stomach contents! At the time the emphasis was on productivity, strain selection, bio refinery, and reducing 'the fouling'. In this biodiversity crisis the mood has changed, and exploring their potential as a low impact activity with an untapped role in ecological restoration and conservation is not seen as much as a distraction or even a frivolity as it was. That many are working on the idea is testament to it. The challenge is how to combine both elements, in a way that can benefit the farmers and the environment. Some of the work I present in the recording is currently being undertaken by ANTHONY ADU-GYAMFI as part of his PhD, Megan Shipton and Peter Lahiff for their successful MSc thesis and others that have worked or are working with me here at Atlantic Technological University Marine and Freshwater Research Centre. We were fortunate to have support by the Marine Institute to access and work in their IMTA site in Lehanagh Pool, Connemara.

Marine fisheries and aquaculture represent a key source of income, food security, nutrition and employment in many developing countries, particularly the least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS). All South-South trade in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors has experienced large growth over the past decade, reaching double or even triple digits. In 2022, South-South trade across various fisheries sectors — marine fisheries, aquaculture, fish processing, and fishing vessels — amounted to $39 billion. Developing countries’ exports of fisheries and aquaculture processed products now account for 53% of the global share. These countries have also made significant strides in value addition within their industries. Developing countries also exhibit notable trade competitiveness in various marine species and by-products. However, these activities are currently threatened by overfishing, harmful subsidies, climate change and pollution. Read the report: https://ow.ly/zxjc50STIzv #WorldFisheriesDay
