What picture comes to mind when you think of a physicist? Do you think of Einstein, Feynmann, Oppenheimer? In honor of #internationalwomensday, phi:male and friends decided to challenge the view of the “physicist”. When looking at old pictures, it becomes evident that an overwhelming majority of physicists were cisgender white men. Since then, much has changed, and physics has become more diverse. The old view of what the physicist is supposed to look or act like no longer exists, as the modern physicist isn’t bound to any specific cultural background, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. Despite the progress made, Physics remains a male-dominated field. This can cause difficulties for the minorities within the field. Concerns of the underrepresented group may go unnoticed or not taken seriously enough and can end up remaining unsolved. The situation does not improve for academics further along in their career (see the leaky pipeline phenomenon). Raising awareness for these problems and giving a platform to address these issues directly is a very important way of working towards solving these issues. That is exactly what phi:male stands for! We had a lot of fun recreating the pictures and hope you enjoy these too! 📷 This photoshoot and post were inspired by our favourite stem-fluencer Eleonora Svanberg, who also does a lot of content on this topic🌟 ETH Diversity ETH Zürich Lucine Tabatt Rebecca Gartner Jessica Prendi
