In 1998, Louis Liebenberg won a Rolex Award for his CyberTracker, a digital tool that enabled indigenous trackers to monetize their skills by recording their observations of wildlife on a handheld device to aid conservation. Downloaded more than 600,000 times, CyberTracker is used in some 200 countries. Now Liebenberg is launching CyberTracker Online, an updated version of the tool for the internet age. The new features could have significant implications for conservation, education and the preservation of the ancient art of tracking. Almost 30 years ago, Brazilian conservationist José Márcio Ayres established the largest continuous stretch of protected rainforest in the world. His vision for the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve was to prioritize the well-being and livelihoods of local people. He knew that keeping them as guardians of the rainforest would be the best way to ensure the lasting success of the reserve. Although Ayres passed away in 2003, his legacy lives on in Mamirauá. Among those he inspired to protect the Amazon is fellow 2002 Rolex Awards Laureate Michel André, who is using his decades of experience at the cutting edge of bioacoustics to monitor the area’s biodiversity through sound. These are our reversing wheels. Patented in 1952, they coordinate to transmit energy to the mainspring, regardless of the direction in which the oscillating weight rotates. Thanks to them, each movement of the Perpetual rotor feeds the power reserve. Key to the automatic winding process, these tough wheels are continuously put to work. Their red colour, introduced in 1957, is a result of the surface treatment applied to the aluminium to ensure its robustness.
