Today, SECO Wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung and the Latvian authorities signed the agreement for the "Remediation of Historical Pollution" programme in Aizkraukle, Latvia 🤝🌍. With a Swiss contribution of CHF 12.2 million, the project addresses pollution at a historically contaminated site along the banks of the Daugava River, Latvia’s main waterway. The soil and groundwater are polluted with oil residues and other harmful substances, posing a direct threat to nearby communities, including Riga, the capital. The remediation efforts will focus on limiting the further spread of pollutants from the contaminated source, reducing emissions risk of discharges into the surrounding areas. This will help protect the drinking water supply for up to 700,000 inhabitants and ensure a long-term positive impact on the environment. The biggest challenge is that the pollution has already deeply infiltrated the ground. This project is part of the second Swiss Contribution to selected EU Member States and reflects Switzerland’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and strengthening environmental protection efforts in Latvia. 💧🌱#SwissLatvianCooperation #SwissContribution #SustainableDevelopment #EnvironmentalProtection
