Scientists as villains, laboratory animals as victims, 3R methods as saviors in times of need? So far, there have been four federal referendums in Switzerland on the subject of animal testing: in 1985, 1992, 1993 and 2022. This research team led by Caroline Brall and Caroline Schlaufer from the University of Bern is analysing these referendums, looking at the pro and contra arguments, but also looking at the narratives (stories) behind them. 38 applications submitted for new National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCRs)🔬 📚 💻 In 2024, the SNSF reviewed 75 NCCR outline proposals in the first evaluation round, and 38 research consortia have now submitted their full proposals. The topics address a range of societal and technical challenges, including #digitalisation, #artificialintelligence, health and nutrition, #sustainability, and the strengthening of democratic societies. The SNSF will evaluate the applications over the coming months and identify NCCRs that are worthy of funding. Its recommendations will be forwarded to the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) in autumn 2025.
