💡🌱 🚀#Innovative #research: As part of the joint funding programme BRIDGE Funding Programme, the SNSF and Innosuisse invested over CHF 25 million in 51 projects in 2024. One of the funded projects (Jordan Aaron (ETHZ), Christian Bermes (University of Applied Sciences Grisons) and Fabian Walter (Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL)) is tackling the global problem of recognising natural hazards at an early stage. Thanks to new developments in robotics, sensor technology and artificial intelligence, event detection is better than ever. In another project, Francesco Stella is developing a robot consisting of flexible structures that will help to improve the interaction between man and machine. BRIDGE starts the 2025-2028 funding period from a position of strength. New data viz dropped! 🎉 Over the past few weeks, I took the time to upskill with React, D3 and GSAP to create a truly custom, interactive web-based visualization. It was a tough journey, but I’m glad I went through it, as I feel much more confident in my abilities now! Big shoutout to Yan Holtz —his React Graph Gallery (https://lnkd.in/eqgY3zJi) was an invaluable resource throughout my learning and creative process. For this project, I focused on a topic close to my heart as an ex-academic: research funding in Switzerland, specifically through the Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF. My own PhD at EPFL was funded by the SNSF, so this felt like the perfect subject to explore—especially since the SNSF has done an incredible job archiving every single grant awarded over the past few decades! At first, I just wanted to visualize the different grants awarded in 2024. But I fell into the data rabbit hole and ended up doing some statistical modelling to uncover long-term trends in research funding since the 1990s. And the results are fascinating. You can clearly see how research trends have evolved over time. For instance: 🔬 1990s – Recombinant DNA 🔭 2000s – The design of the ATLAS detector at CERN 🧬 2010s – MicroRNAs 💻 Today – Quantum computing I’m super excited to share this work publicly and hope you find it as interesting as I have. #WomenInScience — Day of Women and Girls in Science 🙆 🔬 📚 🍃 To strengthen the #leadership qualities of women researchers, the SNSF ran the #PRIMA Leadership Programme for a period of five years. Now, some of the programme participants have written a book to share their experience as women working in science. To raise awareness for the specific challenges that they face, they share personal stories that resonate with the experiences of many in research. #SaveTheDate💡The book will be published this year and a book launch is planned at the SNSF on 29 September. ::::::::::::::: #IDWGS — Tag der Frauen und Mädchen in der Forschung 👩🔬 🚀 🏛️⚗️ Um die Leadership-Qualitäten von Forscherinnen spezifisch zu stärken, hat der SNF fünf Jahre lang das PRIMA Leadership Programm durchgeführt.
