We are working for a new and sustainable relationship with nature. As an academy we are a place of innovation and collaboration. Our work brings human well-being into harmony with biodiversity protection, climate change and sustainable land use. In this, we test concrete solutions and develop scalable projects worldwide. By involving diverse people with a common goal and by translating scientific findings into practice, we create new pathways to sustainability. Our team consists of researchers, diplomats, entrepreneurs and innovators collaborating with business, policy, civil society and communities to co-create strategies and practical results. We turn knowledge into action by breaking out of the silos. Solutions become tangible by testing them in our incubators. Large-scale changes start to manifest by spreading and developing our knowledge throughout local, regional and global networks. Our common goal will be achieved when a new, harmonious relationship with nature receives broad support and becomes visible in many places around the world. Our Hubs cover different regions and countries. They are located in Bern, Southeast Asia, East Africa and South America.

🌳 To replace monoculture cash cropping with better alternatives, the Wyss Academy for Nature’s Hub Southeast Asia is co-designing agroforestry models with our local and regional partners in Sayaboury, Lao PDR. In January 2025, we hosted a five-day participatory agroforestry workshop to equip our local partners with applied agroforestry knowledge. Soon, we will set up an agroforestry learning center for local communities and schools as part of a broader outreach program. With this progress, we’ve moved another step closer to a nature positive and resilient future for the people and nature of Sayaboury. Inzwischen arbeiten weltweit rund 100 Mitarbeitende in diesen Projekten. 🌍🔬 Celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 👩🔬📚 At the Wyss Academy, science is the foundation of everything we do. Today, we honor and celebrate the women in our research teams and those who apply scientific knowledge daily in our projects on the ground. "I believe in women. I believe they are truly positioned to change the world. Women are very compassionate and empathetic by nature. We naturally unite things," said our Professor for Integrative Biodiversity Conservation Science, Dr. Margaret Owuor. With their unique perspectives and invaluable contributions to research, innovation, and practical solutions, women play a pivotal role in the development of science, as well as in creating an equitable and sustainable future for all. "We celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science to ensure women are not only recognized but also empowered to break barriers, challenge the status quo, and lead the way in addressing the critical challenges of our time," remarked Dr. Ursula Harman, PhD, Regional Innovation and Entrepreneurship Officer at the Hub South America. We are inspired and proud of our team of scientists! Tag a woman in science who inspires you! 💡💜 #WomenInScience #STEM #Equality #February11

I am excited to share that my colleagues and I have published an article in The Conversation, in which we explore the concept of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and their potential to address societal challenges in Africa. In this piece, we discuss how NbS can contribute to climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development—while also considering the challenges of implementation.
