We’ve regularly received requests from individuals with backgrounds in computer science or data science who wanted to enhance their skills in the fields of life sciences. Last week, several members of our Centre for Bioinformatics participated in the annual PhyloSIB workshop at the University of Lausanne, co-organised by SIB group leaders, including Maria Anisimova. The event brought together experts in phylogenetics - the study of evolutionary relationships between species - and explored its diverse applications, such as in medicine and ecology. One of the highlights was Jūlija Pečerska’s talk, “Evolution of evolutionary methods: exploring joint tree and alignment inference”. Von der Druckerei ins digitale Labor - Nóirín Graham begann ihre Karriere mit einer Lehre als Drucktechnologin EFZ und studiert heute im 5. Semester Applied Digital Life Sciences (ADLS). Biodiversität überwachen und Heuschrecken lauschen 🦗 Welche Heuschreckenarten tummeln sich auf einer Wiese? Das kannst du in Zukunft mit deinem Handy herausfinden. Tobias Peter, PhD und Matthias Nyfeler vom Departement ZHAW Life Sciences und Facility Management entwickeln eine App, die Heuschreckenlaute erkennt und so die Biodiversität überwacht. Die App soll es ermöglichen, Daten aus der Ferne zu erheben, ohne die Tiere im Feld zu stören. Ziel ist es, die Bevölkerung in die Biodiversitätsforschung einzubeziehen und mehr Informationen zu sammeln #CitizenScience. Heuschrecken sind ein hervorragender Indikator für die Biodiversität, da sie schnell auf Veränderungen der Umgebung reagieren.
