We’re saddened to share the news of the passing of our legacy partner, Dr. Albert Starr.    Dr. Starr co-developed the Starr-Edwards valve – launching the world into the modern era of heart valve disease treatment. His work laid the foundation for advancements in both mechanical and tissue heart valves and, for the first time, offered hope to people suffering from heart valve disorders.    On behalf of the millions of patients whose lives he touched, we extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Starr for his contributions to science and healthcare.

🌍 Strengthening Europe's Health Workforce for Resilient Healthcare Systems 🌍 The 2024 edition of Health at a Glance: Europe highlights an urgent reality: the EU faces a shortage of 1.2 million doctors, nurses, and midwives. This crisis, intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, stems from an ageing population, increased prevalence of chronic diseases, and constant pressure on Healthcare Workforce and systems. The dual demographic challenge—growing healthcare demand alongside a retiring workforce—requires immediate policy action. The report highlights the need to invest in: 🔹 Expanding education and training opportunities for healthcare workers 🔹 Improving working conditions and remuneration to retain talent 🔹 Leveraging technologies such as AI to boost productivity and streamline care The report emphasises the transformative potential of innovation to alleviate workforce pressures and improve care quality. However, unlocking these benefits requires investment in digital literacy, reskilling healthcare workers, and strengthening data infrastructure. This is exactly the purpose of our Working Group on Capacity-Enhancing Innovation ! We are continuously advocating for EU policymakers to act urgently to tackle the growing crisis face by our healthcare workforce. In our Call to Action we present ten policy recommendations highlighting manner to tackle workforce shortages through innovation and integrated planning. 💡 A resilient healthcare workforce is not just a cornerstone of robust health systems but also essential for the EU’s economic recovery and global competitiveness. This week marked a significant milestone for the Medtech Europe Cardiovascular Sector Group, which I am honored to chair. After years of dedicated work and unwavering commitment, we are now in the final steps towards a groundbreaking initiative - a Cardiovascular Health Plan for Europe ! Following the inclusion of this initiative into the 5-year priorities of President Van der Leyen, we deeply appreciate the clear dedication of the newly appointed Commissioner for Health, Oliver Varhelyi to tackling Europe’s leading cause of death, building on the success of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. As part of our efforts this week, the Cardiovascular Sector Group conducted 13 impactful meetings with key stakeholders across all three European institutions: the @European Commission, the Council of the EU, and the European Parliament. These discussions reinforced the critical importance of addressing cardiovascular health at the highest policy levels. We eagerly await the adoption of the Council Conclusions on December 3rd and are ready to contribute to this essential work. A heartfelt thank you to all the members of our sector group and to MedTech Europe for their unwavering support and active engagement. Together, we are driving meaningful change for cardiovascular health in Europe.
