Catalyzing action to reduce methane emissions in the energy, agriculture, and waste sectors
Sobre nosotros
Reducing methane gas is the fastest way to address climate change in the short term. Methane emissions have contributed to roughly 30% of current warming, causing harm to communities around the globe. Reducing methane by 45% is crucial to reducing warming by 0.3 degrees Celsius by 2040 and putting us on a path to a healthy future. While many countries have methane reduction strategies in place, this is the first coordinated approach to methane mitigation funding. We move fast, are nimble, and operate with ambition and vision. The Hub focuses on the energy, agricultural, and waste sectors which account for 96% of human-caused methane emissions. We support ambitious catalytic investments, lay the groundwork for long-term transformation of challenging sectors, and also deliver quick wins in sectors that are ripe for action on the ground. Our actions are global in nature, based out of Santiago, Chile. We focus on the highest emitting sectors and regions.

COP29 has come to a close, and while people have mixed feelings about the outcome, it’s clear that we are in a much different place than in 2016, and the momentum towards climate action will not change. It also became clear that we can play a role as torchbearers of the Global Methane Pledge and continue to make strides in mitigation. After two weeks of productive discussions around successes, challenges, and opportunities – coupled with the COP29 Presidency’s announcement of its COP29 Reducing Methane from Organic Waste Declaration to cut methane emissions from waste dumps – global leaders are departing Azerbaijan with a renewed commitment to collaborative climate action. GMH was on the ground in Baku announcing new funding and hosting a series of events at our Methane Action Pavilion on the urgent threat of and opportunities to curb methane emissions. These events catalyzed climate action by bringing together global policymakers, scientists, activists, and philanthropists to participate in thought-provoking discussions to highlight initiatives to reduce methane emissions worldwide, reflect on progress, identify gaps, and chart a bold path forward. One such initiative - Data to Action - arms citizens, governments, and corporations with data to track and address harmful emissions. A top priority for GMH as data transparency is crucial in the fight against climate change, we announced a new $5 million grant to Carbon Mapper and a $5 million grant to MethaneSAT, and we're proud to host new satellite data releases from both partners. Methane mitigation is no longer a niche issue—it is a global priority. A dramatic reduction of methane emissions by 2030 is key to keeping global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius. GMH remains committed to supporting the ambitious efforts needed to address this challenge, and we are grateful to our partners for their steadfast dedication. Together, we have the tools, knowledge, and momentum to transform goals into action. Let us seize this moment. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gq4Ud6tt

This is progress in action. We’re honored to partner with Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate) on this mission. #COP29
The Environmental Defense Fund joins Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate) with the #InnovationSprint Accelerating Win-Win Solutions for Animal Health and Climate at COP29 Azerbaijan. 🌍🐄 With initial investments of nearly $1.5 million USD, this sprint will spur additional large investments and action in 2025 to advance animal health research with direct climate benefits. This is a first-of-its-kind global campaign set out to: 🤝 Build a coalition of philanthropies, public and private sectors, and scientists to fund, accelerate research, and ramp up on-the-ground farmer supports 🐄 Deliver animal health improvements 💨 Reduce methane emissions from livestock to address climate impacts 🍽️ Lower food waste Lower food waste 🌾 Improve livestock productivity and nutrition security for smallholders and pastoralists worldwide Innovation Sprint Participants: Environmental Defense Fund Global Methane Hub New Zealand Agriculture Greenhouse Gas Research Centre International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Point of Contact: Jennifer Chow #AIM4C #COP29 #ClimateSmartAg #FoodSystems #AIM4CReport #AIM4CInnovationSprint

We’re driving meaningful change together—don’t miss this article from Frontiers on the imperatives for reducing methane emissions #COP29
Methane is the second most important #greenhousegas driving #climatechange. This article, led by Prof Drew Shindell of Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment, published in Frontiers in Science, puts a spotlight on methane as the fastest way to slow #globalwarming right now. The levels are rising fast: between 2010 and 2019 a total warming of 1.07C was observed, of which half a degree was attributed to methane alone. Despite this, little action has been taken to reduce methane emissions, with most efforts continue to be focusing on CO2 mitigation. The article outlines three methane imperatives for reducing emissions: 1️⃣ Changing course and reversing methane emission growth 1️⃣ Aligning methane and carbon dioxide mitigation 3️⃣ Optimizing methane abatement options and policies. One of the contributors to the article hub, Marcelo Mena of Global Methane Hub, joined a panel hosted by Frontiers and the Frontiers Research Foundation together with UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub last week at #COP29, addressing the need to bridge the gap between #science and #policy. 'We need more trust in the system: in farmers, in solutions and in the future of farms and farming. You can have the tools, but if there's no trust, we won't get there,' was the message of former Costa Rican president Carlos Alvarado Quesada during today's event on methane mitigation in livestock. The event brought together a wide range of experts and explored the differentiated but shared responsibilities of methane mitigation. Thank you to all who joined us for this important conversation. Mark van Nieuwland, Gregory Kohler, Babafemi O. OYEWOLE,, Martina Otto, Zitouni Ould-Dada, Donald Moore, and Laura Cramer. Thank you to the Climate & Clean Air Coalition and Global Methane Hub.

We’re collaborating at #COP29 to drive climate solutions forward with our partners Clean Air Task Force. Let’s make an impact!
Today, at the Global Methane Hub pavilion at #COP29, CATF's Paula García Holley joined a panel to explore the steps taken by government and civil society to drive down #methane emissions from waste. Through the #GlobalMethanePledge, there is a huge push to address methane emissions from the solid waste sector – the world's third-largest source of anthropogenic methane emissions.
