As the global community confronts the escalating impacts of climate change, much of the focus has been on #mitigation—reducing #greenhousegas emissions to curb future warming. However, for Small Island Developing States (#SIDS), where the intense effects of #climatechange are already being felt, #adaptation is becoming increasingly urgent. Sustainable organic practices offer a dual benefit by enhancing both adaptation and mitigation efforts. 🌱 💡Check out our new blog on the role of organic farming and waste management in SIDS. 📝 ➡https://bit.ly/OFOWMBJJP24 In this blog, CCAP Research Assistant Joshua Joseph Pangelinan discusses how #organic #agriculture and #sustainable #waste management, particularly in SIDS, serves as a bridge between critical adaptation and mitigation approaches. These practices improve soil health, sequester carbon and strengthen resilience to extreme weather, while simultaneously reducing harmful emissions such as #methane through innovative technologies like anaerobic digestion that can also produce #renewable #energy. ♻️🔋 As demonstrated by recent extreme weather events such as Hurricanes Beryl, Helene and Milton, leveraging organic methods across a multitude of sectors can significantly bolster disaster response and recovery, making them a crucial component in building climate resilience and ensuring long-term sustainability for vulnerable island nations. 🌍

  • As part of the "Accelerating Action" program by the Climate & Clean Air Coalition, members of the #RecycleOrganics team are in #Montevideo this week for working sessions with Ministerio de Ambiente, Uruguay and for multi-stakeholder workshops focused on knowledge-sharing and identifying barriers to implementing waste management projects in the country. This program aims to support #Uruguay, #Honduras and #Brazil in advancing their #climate targets related to #methane, including commitments under the Global Methane Pledge. It features an investment plan that outlines a portfolio of projects and tools to overcome barriers to project financing and ensure long-term financial sustainability. This investment plan aims to serve as a guide for decision-makers. In addition to the workshops, which were supported by the AGENCIA ESPAÑOLA DE COOPERACION INTERNACIONAL PARA EL DESARROLLO - AECID, we also visited several project sites. We spent time at: 🔹 Ontilcor, a project dedicated to energy recovery from rumen. 🔹 Tresor, which began as a composting facility and has since expanded to an organic waste recovery plant. 🔹 The Metropolitan Agri-Food Unit, where we met with professionals from Redalco Uruguay, an initiative aimed at preventing food waste by redirecting unsold produce to support food security for local communities. Uruguay has made significant progress in environmental policy, including a National Waste Management Plan (PNGR). Supporting the development of an investment plan and a package of public policies can further establish Uruguay as a regional leader in capacity-building and waste management technology implementation. • Join us in reliving a significant milestone at the #Lautoka Market in Fiji, as the market made significant strides towards its #sustainability journey this October with the handover of 20 green wheelie bins for the segregation and collection of organic waste. This initiative, part of the #RecycleOrganics Program funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada, aims to streamline separation at the source, ensuring that organic waste generated by the market’s vendors is composted efficiently to produce nutrient-rich organic fertilizer that then becomes available to the public. ♻️ 🌱 "By providing bins for organic waste separation, we can facilitate the process of producing high quality #compost, making it easier for communities and the Lautoka City Council to manage organic waste. We can raise awareness about #climatechange and #methane mitigation, contributing to a more sustainable future for #Fiji." - Head of Cooperation at the Canadian High Commission, David Fournier. By turning waste into valuable compost and embracing #circularity, the Lautoka Market is not only addressing waste management issues and reducing GHG emissions, but it is also empowering local communities to sustainably grow their own food. It also generates savings for the city in the transportation and final disposal of waste, while educating people on the importance of sustainable waste management practices. 🌿 This handover marks a substantial step towards a greener future for Lautoka and serves as an inspiring example for markets across the region to replicate. 🍃 📝 Read More ➡ https://lnkd.in/d9SEcd9Q ImplementaSur CCAP

  • Saint Lucia generates a significant amount of organic waste that could be redirected from landfills. The country’s Municipal Solid Waste is mainly composed of organic materials (53%), with plastics at 20% and paper and cardboard at 12%. By using technologies like composting and anaerobic digestion, we can effectively manage this organic waste and reduce harmful #greenhouse gas emissions, including #methane, from the waste sector. 💡 Last week, we launched the #RecycleOrganics Home Composting Program in Saint Lucia, distributing over 150 composting kits to families and individuals in six communities! The initiative has been enthusiastically embraced, with residents already benefiting from their new home composting systems. This program aims to enhance climate resilience at the neighborhood level and help reduce emissions from the waste sector, while also generating numerous additional co-benefits. ♻️ 🌱 During our visit, we conducted three composting training sessions and collaborated with local stakeholders to explore more opportunities for expanding organic waste management technologies, including potential partnerships on sargassum projects. 🌿 In collaboration with the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority, we will establish a monitoring plan to ensure the sustainability of the Pilot Home Composting Program and gather data on its performance. 📈 Additional initiatives we’re pursuing in Saint Lucia include: ✅ Partnering with Sir Arthur Lewis Community College to launch an anaerobic digestion pilot program in early 2025 to process livestock manure. The college will integrate the byproducts on its farm and incorporate this technology into its curriculum, enabling students and farmers to learn about its benefits. ✅ Supporting the SLSWMA in developing a regulatory framework that creates a culture of organic waste source separation among waste generators. This will be a significant move toward incentivizing the separation of organic waste at the source and decreasing the volume of waste directed to the Deglos Landfill. ✅ Creating organic waste management plans for hotels to implement circular-economy practices by composting food and green waste. The resulting compost will be used in their own orchards, herb gardens, and greenhouses to supply fresh produce for their restaurants and plants for their gardens. The Recycle Organics program, supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada, operates in over 20 countries worldwide and has the potential to reduce more than 30.1 million tons of CO2e.
