#COP29 concluded in Baku this weekend with a deal. What happened and what needs to happen next? 👉 The main objective of COP29 was to deliver a new finance goal to support developing countries to reduce their emissions and adapt to the climate crisis, and to pave the way to countries’ new climate pledges expected next year. 👉 It did (eventually) close with a deal on the New Collective Quantified Goal, but this figure remains insufficient to meet the needs of those countries most vulnerable to climate change. 👉 Last year, we celebrated the historic pledge from countries at COP28 to ‘transition away’ from fossil fuels. But this time, the plan to turn this ambition into action was pushed back to next year’s summit in Brazil. 👉 Despite the frustrations shared at the end of the COP on these two critical priorities, COP29 saw some progress. After nearly a decade of negotiations, COP29 reached agreement on carbon trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Mexico, Latin America’s second-largest emitter, announced it will set a target to reach net zero by 2050. 25 countries and the EU announced plans to include a pledge for ‘no new unabated coal power’ in their next climate plans (NDCs). More than 30 countries representing nearly 50% of global methane emissions signed up to a new declaration to set targets in future NDCs on reducing methane from organic waste.    Read our full analysis here 👇

We’re supporting 2 Polish citizens in taking legal action against their government over the impact air pollution is having on their health. A man from Rybnik and boy from outside Toruń, represented by his mother, are filing a lawsuit against the Polish government for the impacts that air pollution has had on their health, including asthma and other respiratory conditions. The claimants are seeking to gain protection of their fundamental rights, as well as compensation. We’ll bring you updates as the case progresses. Full story here: https://lnkd.in/edgkPufj

📢 In just one week's time, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), will be asked to give its Advisory Opinion on what governments the world over must do to protect the planet and our human rights in the face of climate change, as well as what the legal consequences for governments are where their actions have caused significant harm to the environment. This AO is being requested by the UN General Assembly, championed by the State of Vanuatu, Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change and World's Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ). It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Devika Waney Mokhtarzadeh, a cherished member of the ClientEarth family.   Devika was a long-standing ClientEarth funder, Trustee, and Development Board member. Her connection to ClientEarth began in 2017, sparked by her passion for our work on chemicals. She deeply understood the connection between chemicals, the environment, and human health and was determined to make a difference. Thanks to her vision and unwavering belief, our chemicals programme has grown into a thriving and impactful force for change.   Beyond her generous support, Devika brought her boundless creativity and energy to everything she touched. She opened her family’s Arts Club in London to us, hosting unforgettable donor events, and championed our work on every stage and in every space. Her grace and humility shone through in everything she did, including a remarkable event last year at Ladbroke Hall where she shared her story alongside Brian Eno, Brian Rohan, and Tatiana Lujan. She captivated the audience, as she always did, with her heartfelt words.   Devika’s loss will be felt deeply within ClientEarth, the wider environmental community, and, above all, by her loving family and friends. Our thoughts are with them.

⚠️We're in court in Luxembourg today with lawyer Quentin Mautray against the European Commission because we want them to stop labelling false solutions to the climate crisis as 'sustainable'. Just because something has a 'bio' prefix, doesn't mean it's good for people and the environment. Stay tuned for developments on the case.

The UK's Office for Environmental Protection has launched an investigation after we made a joint complaint with WWF-UK about potential water pollution risk. The Farming Rules for Water help ensure that agricultural fertilisers do not pollute waterways but, in our view, the government's guidance on the Rules unlawfully undermines their impact. We look forward to the outcome of the OEP's investigation in anticipation that this will ensure that England's waterways are protected in accordance with the law.

Protected must mean protected. Governments are allowing destructive bottom trawling in designated Marine Protected Areas, which goes against EU law. Our partner BUND is suing the German government for failing to protect the #Doggerbank Marine Protected Area, following our bottom trawling lawsuits against France and Spain.
