On the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival, EU China Energy Magazine 2024 August issue is approved for distribution.
In this issue, we start with an examination of the success of the EU’s inaugural Hydrogen Bank auction, where, the winning bids came in lower than expected. We delve into the implications of these surprising results and consider how this innovative mechanism aligns with the EU’s vision of building a competitive green hydrogen economy.
Next, we turn our attention to the EU’s groundbreaking regulation aimed at reducing methane emissions from the energy sector, where coal mining is the largest contributor. We analyse the potential effect of this regulation on emission reductions, and discuss its impact on coal producers both within and beyond EU borders.
Our focus then shifts to China, where, despite a significant push towards renewables, coal power continues to expand to ensure energy security, operational flexibility, and heating. We explore the critical challenges in phasing down coal-fired power while meeting growing energy demands and achieving net-zero targets, as well as potential solutions to accelerate its substitution.
As the global economy shifts towards a green future, the materials market is undergoing a historic transformation driven by the rising demand for critical materials. We look at how this material transition can be effectively managed to support the energy transition, paving the way for a healthier, more sustainable world.
Green hydrogen emerges as a promising solution to reduce emissions in hard-to-abate sectors and could play a pivotal role in global decarbonization efforts. We summarise a recent IRENA report that draws lessons from hydrogen strategies worldwide, offering valuable insights for policymakers to craft their own strategies for fostering a hydrogen economy.
Another noteworthy development this summer is the release of a series of important policy documents to support China’s green transition, as you will find in our regular News in Brief section. Our monthly publication, the EU-China Energy Monitor, will continue to provide a more detailed account of these regulatory developments.
Finally, we are excited to announce a new addition to our team! This July, we welcomed Zhang Nuoxin Celeste as our Project Assistant. Celeste is fluent in Chinese, English, and Italian.
We hope you enjoy this issue. May the beauty of the full moon illuminate your celebrations.
