Usher in China's Protein Innovation | Innovation Lead @GFIC

It was a pleasure to try Vow's products a few days ago at #TheAubrey at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Hong Kong. 💹 Australian startup Vow is the #first company to sell #cultivatedmeat products in #China, building on their successful #Singapore debut. Over the past years, leading Chinese #cultivatedmeat companies, such as Joes Future Food and CellX, have also made significant progress on #commercialisation and R&D. 📝 However, Vow and other cultivated meat companies will still need to secure approval from authorities in #Beijing before they are able to sell their products anywhere in #mainlandChina. Since the food regulators in the special administrative regions of #HongKong and #Macau do not operate under the same #regulatory system as the rest of the country. 🍨 The two products—#ForgedParfait and the "fat-washed" cocktail made with the #ForgedGras reminded me of the beauty of #MolecularGastronomy. Chefs could utilize the cultivated Japanese quail as a versatile #ingredient to create imaginative, delicious, and nutritious cuisine, while incorporating #culturaldiversity into recipes. 🍸 The cocktail is a one-month exclusive item. Friends, please drop me a line if you are in town and crave a bite of #futurefood 😋 Thanks team for hosting me, Dalia Adler, Sarah Separovich! Always inspired by amazing work from the Vow team, Jeroen Boersma, and Neel Reddy 雷慕远!

🔥📰 HOT OFF THE PRESS: GFI’s first column for Nature Magazine—one of the world’s most-read and prestigious scientific journals. "Meat production is long overdue for an upgrade," say authors Ryan Huling, Wasamon Nutakul, PhD, Samuel Goh, and Doris Lee. "Asian innovation hubs have the capacity, workforce, and incentives to achieve taste parity for plant-based meat, resolve technical challenges, and take cultivated meat from test kitchens to supermarkets around the world." Pulling from a proven playbook, China and other Asian countries are accelerating alternative-protein development through public investments and regional scientific collaborations. At a joint China–Singapore conference last month, scientists exchanged insights on techniques to scale up alternative-meat industrialisation. 🇸🇬 🇨🇳 These included layering flavour pockets from cultivated animal cells into plant-based protein sheets to make hybrid products; using yeast protein in alternative-meat formulations; and designing innovative bioreactors that reduce cultivated-meat production costs by leveraging computer simulations to test for optimal growth conditions. ➕ Economics is one driving force behind Asia's interest in alternative proteins, but there are geopolitical benefits, too. In China, for instance, local meat producers have resorted to importing hundreds of millions of tonnes of soya beans and maize (corn) to fulfil their domestic animal-feed needs. Last year, to keep pace with surging demand, China also brought in at least nine million tonnes of meat from abroad, making it the world’s largest meat importer. But a core tenet of President Xi's approach to food security, articulated with increased frequency in the past few years, is that the Chinese people’s metaphorical "rice bowls" must always be "filled mainly with Chinese grain" — a goal hindered by a heavy dependence on international imports. By mastering the art of making protein from plants, microorganisms, and cultivated cells, China can produce a lot more of it and bolster self-sufficiency by reducing reliance on animal feed and meat from abroad. 👉 Full column: https://lnkd.in/gt9Xj99C

  • GFIC sensed a unique market opportunity in China and gave a keynote speech introducing the state of the current alternative protein industry at FBIF 2024, a premier F&B industry tradeshow in China, where two global leaders in the precision fermentation space, US-based Perfect Day and Germany-based Formo also presented their solutions to the Chinese audience for the first time.
