DEMONAX* is a Union Civil Protection Mechanism (#UCPM) Full-Scale Earthquake Preparedness Exercise, funded by European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO). *(Demonax (Δημώναξ) was a famous Cypriot Cynic philosopher who lived in Greece around the 2nd century AD) The aim of DEMONAX is to strengthen the capacity of the Republic of Cyprus to effectively prepare for, and respond to the statistically very likely occurrence of a large-scale earthquake event on the island, one which can severely disrupt the implementation of all societal functions and result in substantial human and financial losses. The aim of DEMONAX is also to test and improve the Republic’s ability to activate the #UCPM and to effectively carry out the Host Nation Support (#HNS) guidelines of the European Union for incoming international support teams. I was privileged to participate and contribute as an #AdvisoryBoard member to the proceedings of the #FinalConference of the RED ROSES project, funded by EU in Emergencies. The event took place in #Brussels, #Belgium, at the premises of the Red Cross EU Office (we are grateful for your hospitality!) The event was a key milestone in the consortium's efforts to strengthen disaster risk prevention and preparedness in #crossborder regions. It allowed participants to reflect on the project implementation tasks, to explore the lessons learned, and to engage in discussions on how to sustain these efforts beyond the project’s lifespan. The Conference was addressed by Mr Erwan Marteil, Head of Unit, ECHO B3 - Prevention & Preparedness Capacity Building, and was attended by DG-ECHO Project Officers Mr. Juha-Pekka Jäpölä, Mr. Riccardo Grisanti and Mr. Juan F. Galván Montero. My presentation highlighted the key project achievements of the project, as viewed from the perspective of the Advisory Board: - The facilitation of large-scale communication and collaboration between French and Italian cross-border Civil Protection stakeholders. - The development of the elaborate cross-border #SpatialDataInfrastructure (SDI) which provided comprehensive disaster management information and tools for the civil protection stakeholders. The SDI can become an invaluable tool for the facilitation of improved decision-making during the management of of cross-border emergencies. I also had the opportunity to discuss the challenges and the opportunities associated with the future exploitation of the project's results, based on my extensive experience on the implementation of similar projects. The RED ROSES project was launched in March 2023 under the coordination of Croix-Rouge française, aiming to address the growing challenges of natural challenges of disasters from natural hazards along the French-Italian border, particularly in the Susa and Roya valleys. Honoured to have taken active part at the 6th Arab Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, at #Kuwait organised by UNDRR Arab States and the Government of Kuwait. I had the honor to take part in the panel discussion on “the role of education and awareness in disaster risk reduction”, which was supported by the League of Arab States - General Secretariat and UNESCO . I used examples from the work we perform at CERIDES - Center of Excellence in Risk and Decision Sciences at European University Cyprus to illustrate the need for the formation of a pro-prevention culture and the need for the society to embrace it. #ArabRP2025

Ce mercredi débute la formation dédiée à la lutte aérienne et terrestre contre les feux de forêt et d'espaces naturels, dans le cadre du projet européen SEMEDFIRE South Eastern Mediterranean Excellence Development In Fire Research organisée par CERIDES - Center of Excellence in Risk and Decision Sciences en collaboration avec Nîmes Métropole et la Direction générale de la Sécurité civile et de la gestion des crises à Nicosie, Chypre. 🇪🇺🚒 L'expertise de l'Entente-Valabre est également mise à contribution, avec la participation du Lcl Frédéric VAUCOULEUR en tant que formateur. Dans le cadre du Work Package 6, qui aborde la "Gouvernance de la protection civile et contre les feux de forêt", l'objectif est de transférer des connaissances, de l'expertise et des retours d'expérience à l'Université européenne de Chypre (EUC), coordinateur du projet, mais également aux parties prenantes gouvernementales de la région. Des délégations venant de Jordanie et de Grèce participent également à cette formation. 🌎🌍 La #MREI est par ailleurs présente afin de mettre en œuvre la session et de présenter le fonctionnement de la gestion de crise et de la réponse opérationnelle incluant les moyens nationaux en France et plus particulièrement dans le cas des feux de forêts. De nombreuses questions sur le volontariat des sapeurs-pompiers ont également été abordées signe de l'intérêt porté à ces sujets par les participants. — 🇬🇧 This Wednesday sees the start of training in aerial and ground-based fire-fighting in forest and natural areas, as part of the European SEMEDFIRE project organised by CERIDES in collaboration with Nîmes Métropole and the Directorate-General for Civil Security and Crisis Management in Nicosia, Cyprus. The expertise of the Entente-Valabre is also being called upon, with the participation of Lcl Frédéric VAUCOULEUR as a trainer. As part of Work Package 6, which deals with 'Governance of civil protection and forest fires', the aim is to transfer knowledge, expertise and feedback to the European University of Cyprus (EUC), the project coordinator, as well as to government stakeholders in the region. Delegations from Jordan and Greece are also taking part. The #MREI is also present to set up the session and present how crisis management and operational response works, including national resources in France, and more specifically in the case of forest fires. Cyprus Civil Defence is the coordinating organisation of the project. The aim of #DEMONAXCy is to strengthen the capacity of the Republic of Cyprus to effectively prepare for, and respond to the statistically very likely occurrence of a large-scale #earthquake event on the island, one which can severely disrupt the implementation of all societal functions and result in substantial human and financial losses. Dr. Christos Dimopoulos, CERIDES newly appointed Director of Science in Civil Protection, attended the project's kick-off meeting which took place in #Brussels on the 6th of February 2025. CERIDES has provided full support to Cyprus Civil Defence during the design and submission of the project proposal, offering its extensive scientific expertise in the domain of #CivilProtection. CERIDES will be responsible for managing the implementation of the projects' comprehensive exercise evaluation activities based on the #FAIM (FAcilitate - IMprovement) evaluation framework, which has been designed and tested by Dr. Christos Dimopoulos in multiple #UCPM Full-Scale Preparedness Exercises in the past few years. CERIDES will also be responsible for the implementation of the project's extensive dissemination and visibility activities. 📢 Our Post-Doctoral Researcher Dr. Shifa Mathbout was privileged to have an #interview with #AlSharq newspaper in #Qatar, where she discussed #climatechange in the #Gulf region in general, with a specific focus on Qatar. Climate Action in Qatar: A Step Towards Sustainability 🌱 Dr. Shifa Mathbout, a climate science researcher, emphasized that Qatar’s new environmental and climate strategy marks a critical step toward sustainable development. By focusing on #sustainability, #innovation, and #carbon #emission #reduction, this strategy strengthens the country's ability to tackle future challenges while preserving natural resources for future generations. She highlighted that #Gulf countries face complex climate challenges, including rising temperatures and water scarcity, which impact migration patterns and economic growth. Investing in sustainable infrastructure not only enhances climate resilience but also attracts skilled migrants, striking a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation. Dr. Mathbout also underscored the role of scientific research in addressing climate conflicts, particularly through innovative solutions in water efficiency and desalination technologies. She believes that bridging research with public engagement is key to shaping effective strategies for a sustainable future. Recognized as one of the most influential Arab women in Europe in 2022, she continues to expand her research and advocacy efforts, strengthening collaboration with policymakers and community leaders.
