𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 Nagoya University houses a state-of-the-art driving simulator, recognized as the world's first large-scale, five-screen CAVE stereoscopic virtual reality (VR) system. Developed in collaboration with FORUM8, this high-precision simulator is designed for advanced vehicle dynamics and driving behavior research. The system uses a 5-screen stereoscopic projection system from Christie Digital delivering a 315 degrees field of view with a screen-top mounted array of ART ARTTRACK5 cameras, chosen for their accuracy and long-range. The stereoscopic projection combined with the ART motion tracking system gives the driver a sense of “presence” (otherwise known as “immersion”) inside the virtual space using the combined effects of overlapping objects, the sense of depth and the sense of distance. The challenge presented was the need to track the driver’s movement inside a car which was itself mounted on a 6dof Moog motion base. We achieved this using a combination of a SMARTTRACK self-contained tracking system inside the car linked to an array of ARTTRACK5 cameras outside it. We refer to this integrated combination as our “Satellite Merger” add-on which also includes reference tracking targets on the car and the motion base so that their 6dof coordinates can be tracked independently of the driver inside the car. With close ties to Toyota Motor Corporation, two early projects of the center were to evaluate the impact of “super small” personal mobility vehicles, especially with relation to an aging population, and to educate drivers in efficient driving techniques so that they use less fuel and in turn emit less greenhouse gases. By combining ART's motion tracking with FORUM8's simulation software, Nagoya University's research system offers an unmatched toolkit for the analysis of vehicle and driver performance in enhancing vehicle design, improving safety, and even autonomous driving technologies.
