We've had the privilege of working with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) for the last 17 years, starting when we supplied and integrated our motion-tracking cameras in their first CAVE immersive visualization system. It began a revolution in how JLR designs its cars which continues to the present day. Commissioned in late 2007, the CAVE delivered remarkable results, saving over GBP 8 million in vehicle development costs within its first two years of operation. The 1:1 scale immersive and interactive simulations enable engineers to visualize full size 3D models of assemblies, and even entire vehicles long before physical parts are required. Fast forward to today and we’re following with great interest the criticism and reaction to JLR’s bold "Copy Nothing" relaunch campaign. But we know that behind the scenes, JLR’s ART-powered interactive and immersive visualization systems continue to play a crucial role in assisting product development innovation; from reviewing exterior and interior designs to optimizing aerodynamics, crash performance, and manufacturing processes, these systems drastically reduce the need for costly physical prototypes and extensive prototype testing. Lately we've been talking about the benefits of group VR using motion tracked immersive large screen systems - both LED wall and projected, and in Powerwall and CAVE formats. Our customers tell us that unlike head-mounted displays (HMDs), this kind of group VR allows participants to maintain more natural interactions with each other as their facial expressions and body language are fully visible. This fosters better communication which in turn improves team-based decision-making and creative problem-solving. Additionally, recent developments in projector technology from Barco and Digital Projection, paired with 6dof ART motion tracking, now allow multiple users to be individually tracked in the virtual space. We talked recently about the isolating effect that can be felt when using a HMD. Even though HMD users may be able to see each other as avatars, nothing can beat the level of verbal and visual interaction between real people in close proximity. That's why the new generation of integrated multiviewer LED displays are so effective. By offering motion tracked multiple viewing perspectives, these displays replicate how we perceive depth and spatial relationships in the real world. Additionally, the lightweight optical tracking targets used mean that the system is more comfortable and less disorientating when used for extended sessions. VR Multiview LED displays offer enhanced immersion and improved collaboration whilst providing an accessible, comfortable experience. At South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences' XR Laboratory, Barco projectors and ART motion tracking have transformed immersive learning through their CAVE system. Here's Professors Mark Fiolka and Wilhelm Hannibal sharing insights (in German) into the advantages this setup offers for collaborative learning, noting that the CAVE’s group-based approach significantly improves team dynamics compared to individuals wearing head-mounted displays (HMDs). After a year of use, they have observed that the CAVE not only strengthens interactivity within groups but also deepens engagement with real-time 3D applications. This immersive environment allows students to grasp complex concepts more rapidly and effectively. And by incorporating ART motion tracking, students experience full visual immersion—feeling fully surrounded by computer-generated content—yet are able to interact and communicate with each other naturally. This approach not only enhances focus within the virtual environments but also promotes meaningful collaboration, paving the way for a deeper understanding of complex processes.
