🦏 𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 🇰🇪 Kenya's black rhino population has surpassed 1,000 individuals, a remarkable increase from approximately 380 in 1985. This incredible achievement underscores the power of dedicated conservation efforts and stringent anti-poaching measures. 🌱At the AMES Foundation, we are inspired by such milestones and remain steadfast in our mission to protect Africa's most endangered species. This year, our efforts contributed to the birth of five white rhino calves at our Dabchick reserve - an encouraging sign of progress and a tangible impact of our conservation initiatives. 💡However, the journey is far from over. Rhinos still face dual threats of poaching and habitat loss, reminding us that continuous action is critical and that without sustained and intensified efforts, the gains made could quickly unravel. That’s why the AMES Foundation leverages innovative technologies, including AI-driven monitoring systems and drone surveillance, to enhance protection efforts. We also work closely with local communities to create sustainable livelihoods, offering training and support that align conservation with economic opportunities. Our recent partnership with icuserver GmbH and Kenya’s Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI) is an exciting step on this journey. 📸 In collaboration with icuserver GmbH, we have provided WRTI with 10 sets of ICU wildlife monitoring systems, equipped with advanced CLOM cameras and solar panels, to enhance wildlife monitoring in Kenya. These systems, previously deployed successfully in our Dabchick Wildlife Reserve, are equipped to capture high-quality data. 🦌 A very specific use-case is monitoring species like the critically endangered Roan Antelope, of which fewer than 30 individuals remain in Kenya. 🌱 The advanced camera systems are designed to operate effectively even in low light and dense vegetation, tracking the habits of elusive wildlife with precision. This real-time data collection is essential to safeguard endangered species by allowing continuous monitoring without disrupting natural habitats. 📈 During icuserver GmbHs visit, discussions centred on potentially integrating this collected data into Kenya’s national wildlife database. This integration would represent a significant step forward in making biodiversity data widely accessible and impactful for future conservation strategies. 🤝 We’re proud of this collaborative effort with ICU and WRTI, and we look forward to expanding our conservation initiatives across more regions in Africa. A few weeks ago, one of our co-founders Lea C. Henzgen had the pleasure of being a guest on a podcast hosted by Dr. Thomas Ramge and SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen. As an African conservation foundation, one of our core pillars is expanding protected habitat, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 30𝐱30 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 30% 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡. 🦏 However, expanding protected habitats is only the first step. Every additional protected hectare needs to be managed, from anti-poaching and reforestation to alien vegetation clearing, all coming with a cost. Today the sad reality is that 2/3rds of African reserves are underfunded and unable to effectively protect the biodiversity therein. 🌳 Having actively acquired and rewilded land in South Africa, we have been excited by the potential behind biodiversity credits as a way to change how we finance habitat expansion. As members of the Biodiversity Credit Alliance and having participated in the Sustainable Finance Coalition Biodiversity Credits Incubator in South Africa, we have seen there are many undeniable challenges to overcome in developing this market. In particular, who will buy them? 💸 So who should be responsible for paying for nature conservation? Today’s funding streams, largely based on government support and philanthropy, are insufficient. We still face a $700 billion/year biodiversity funding gap. However, over 50% of all GDP ($56 trillion) is dependent on nature. Nature is a critical infrastructure for businesses, the economy, and society at large, but our stock of natural capital is rapidly depreciating because we fail to invest in its maintenance or restoration. Creating novel ways for the business community to play a role is not just good for nature; it’s good for business. 🌿 The good news is there is growing momentum and support from the corporate world, which can’t ignore the risks that climate change poses to business as usual. Today, businesses are waking up to the idea that healthy ecosystems are an asset on the balance sheet. Furthermore, advancements in technology and accounting standards now make it possible to quantify and record nature uplift in ways never possible before. 🤝 Together with The Landbanking Group we are working to make it possible to invest in nature protection and restoration. We are developing what we call the first “𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐬” in South Africa. Each unit links a unit of biophysical nature preservation or enhancement to a financial payment, offering land stewards outcome-based rewards. Investors, in turn, gain verifiable proof of nature stewardship. The Landbanking Group calls this novel concept “Nature Equity.” 🌍Nature Equity contracts, backed by transparent ecosystem monitoring and accounting standards, are emerging as a novel asset class. We are excited to announce our partnership with the esteemed The Landbanking Group to pioneer an innovative way to invest in conservation. 🤝 There is an unprecedented demand for 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 of our earth’s natural ecosystems. Particularly as we are undergoing a biodiversity and interlinked climate crisis. In previous years it was limited to just carbon sequestration, which was easily quantified. But what about 𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺? 🌱 On the other side, investors are presented with complex, immeasurable or risk-laden opportunities in nature.
