Battery Pass is a consortium project aiming to advance the implementation of the battery passport in Europe and beyond
Info
Co-funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the Battery Pass consortium project aims to advance the implementation of the battery passport based on requirements of the EU Battery Regulation and beyond. Led by system change company Systemiq GmbH, the consortium comprises eleven partners and a broad network of associated and supporting organisations to draft content and technical standards for a digital battery passport, demonstrate them in a pilot application and assess its potential value. The project started in April 2022 and runs over three years.

🔍 3 key steps for businesses to maximise value with the EU Battery Passport To unlock the full potential of the EU Battery Passport, businesses should take a strategic approach to implementation. Our latest study, ‘Unlocking the Value of the EU Battery Passport’ outlines three essential steps to prepare for the battery passport. 1️⃣ Assess implementation readiness Evaluate your business’s capabilities in software development and hardware set-up, data management, and daily passport operations to ensure a smooth start. 2️⃣ Identify strategic opportunities Develop a business case highlighting potential cost savings, new revenue, environmental impact, and resilience benefits, along with a clear implementation roadmap. 3️⃣ Select implementation strategies Optimise internal resources, explore partnerships, and consider third-party providers (especially helpful for SMEs in reducing fixed costs). Collaborate across the value chain to enable efficient reporting through traceability systems. These steps will apply differently to economic operators responsible for the battery passport, and data providers who support information sharing along the value chain. To fully unlock the passport’s potential, businesses should align their preparations and consider testing traceability systems to facilitate seamless data exchange and reporting across the chain. ⁉️ What are the challenges of implementing the EU Battery Passport? As we continue to explore the strategic value of the EU Battery Passport, it's crucial to also acknowledge the challenges that come with its implementation. Our latest study, ‘Unlocking the Value of the EU Battery Passport’, dives into these hurdles and offers actionable insights for businesses and policymakers to navigate them effectively. Key challenges identified: 1️⃣ Implementation efforts: Over 90%+ of implementation tasks are fixed costs, with critical activities like software development and project management largely independent of battery sales volumes – posing challenges for SMEs in particular. 2️⃣ Data management: Data management is expected to account for about 55% of total implementation effort. Businesses without optimised processes or sufficient data infrastructure may struggle with efficient battery passport implementation. 3️⃣ Regulatory uncertainties: Remaining regulatory uncertainties around data standardisation and the requirements for dynamic data must be addressed to enable smooth and consistent implementation. Discover the practical steps businesses and policymakers can take to overcome these challenges and fully unlock the strategic potential of the EU Battery Passport. 👉 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eUQ4agDv

Our Q&A series on the Battery Passport Content Guidance concludes with a look ahead. ❓ How will remaining uncertainties regarding the battery passport be addressed? 💡 The EU Battery Regulation is just the beginning. Around 50 Delegated and Implementing Acts will follow over the coming years, offering further clarity on essential topics like carbon footprint, circularity, performance, and access to battery passport data. These will focus on the 'What’, i.e. the data requirements for battery passports specifically. 📓 With the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) in force since July 2024, key technical details for implementing Digital Product Passports in general (including the Battery Passport) are taking shape. Ongoing standardisation efforts, led by CEN-CENELEC in JTC24, focus on the ‘How’, i.e. technical specifications like data carriers and data exchange which are crucial for effective implementation of DPPs. Curious about what’s next? 👉 Download the full factsheet on our website for more insights. https://lnkd.in/e5SgCvHw To learn more about the Secondary Legislation following the EU Battery Regulation specifically, explore this overview https://lnkd.in/eCmtiWNy #BatteryPass #BatteryRegulation #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Standardisation #DPP
