”EU harmonization puts Moldovan agriculture at a crossroads.” This is the title of my recent publication for the German Economic Team project. The newsletter provides a reader-friendly incursion into the agricultural sector and underlines why it is so vital for the Moldovan economy but also what are the challenges it currently faces. The publication especially focuses on how the country progresses towards harmonizing its legislation with the EU Acquis and how the German-Moldovan Agricultural Policy Dialogue project (APD) supports the country's agriculture administration on its path towards the EU. We are delighted to have been invited to the UFAP-conference "Decentralized Energy Solutions for Ukraine's Security", taking place at The Clingendael Institute in The Hague on November 25th. The conference explored how small-scall renewable generation facilities can enhance #Ukraine's #energy resilience, exploiting the country's vast potential in #wind, #solar and bio-energy. Robert Kirchner provided an overview of the current challenges Ukraine's energy system faces, as well as possible short and long term solutions, including the import of spare parts via the Energy Support Fund, electricity imports from the European Union, as well as an extension of decentralised energy supply. At the same time, Ukraine must address problems constraining the system's flexibility and adaptability: These include technical adaptions, as well as market and regulatory reforms. https://lnkd.in/dRDfB3St

Zu einem Austausch mit dem Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz über die Aktivitäten und Herausforderungen deutscher Unternehmen in der #Ukraine lud der Ost-Ausschuss heute in seine Berliner Geschäftsstelle ein. Moderiert wurde die Veranstaltung von Philip Sweens, dem Sprecher des Arbeitskreises Ukraine im Ost-Ausschuss. Beteiligt waren unter anderem Unternehmen aus der Energie- und Gesundheitswirtschaft, der Logistik und von Finanzinstituten. Im Mittelpunkt standen die Herausforderungen deutscher Unternehmen auf dem ukrainischen Markt. Dazu gehören vor allem die schwierigen Finanzierungs- und Versicherungsbedingungen, aber auch bürokratisch aufwändige Verfahren in der Ukraine selbst und die mangelnde Koordinierung der Unterstützungsinstrumente. Trotz dieser Probleme ist die Bereitschaft der Unternehmen an einem Engagement im Land groß, wie die Nachfrage nach Investitionsgarantien des Bundes zeigt. Diese Themen werden auch am 11. Dezember bei der 7. Auflage des Deutsch-Ukrainischen Wirtschaftsforums von Ost-Ausschuss, DIHK und AHK Ukraine - German-Ukrainian Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Berlin diskutiert werden, an dem die Regierungschefs beider Länder und zahlreiche Ministerinnen und Minister teilnehmen. #RecoveryUkraine Michael Harms Alena Akulich Kateryna Kyslenko

Am 26. November 2024 findet der vom Ost-Ausschuss der Deutschen Wirtschaft und der Botschaft der Republik #Usbekistan gemeinsam mit weiteren Partnern organisierte "Uzbek Law Day" statt. Im Zentrum der Veranstaltung werden die rechtlich-administrativen, institutionellen sowie makroökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen für ausländische Investoren in Usbekistan stehen. Wir freuen uns, Teil eines Panels zu sein, das insbesondere die Perspektive deutscher Investoren sowie die Entwicklung der administrativen und #makroökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen in Usbekistan und der Region in den Blick nimmt. On November 14th, we had the opportunity to participate in the panel discussion ‘Sustainable Recovery and Investment Support: Opportunities for Rebuilding Ukraine's Energy Sector‘ within the framework of the ReBuild Ukraine-conference, taking part in Warsaw. The panel explored strategies and means for a sustainable reconstruction of #Ukraine's energy sector, heavily targeted by shelling in the ongoing war. Robert Kirchner, Head of the Low Carbon Ukraine-project and the energy division at Berlin Economics, addressed challenges of energy transformation, with a particular focus on human capital. He drew on the example of Germany's own #Energiewende and how the experiences made there can be transferred to the case of Ukraine, particularly, the importance of skilled personnel and knowledge transfer as a prerequisiste for a succesful energy transformation. 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗳: 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲'𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 Despite significant challenges and the loss of production capacity caused by the ongoing war, #Ukraine's steel industry remains a vital part of the economy, with substantial potential for sustainable transformation. Our latest policy brief, “Ukraine’s Steel Sector: State of Play and Pathways to a Greener Future,” offers an in-depth analysis of the current state of Ukraine's steel industry, the effects of the war on production assets, the distribution of production technologies, and the sector’s CO₂ emissions profile, while exploring viable pathways for decarbonisation. By prioritising investments in mature low-carbon technologies, such as the scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) route in the short to medium term, Ukraine could reduce CO₂ emissions by 43% by 2035 with an estimated investment of EUR 1.1–2.0 billion. Introducing the H₂-DRI-EAF route after 2030 could further raise emissions reductions to 63% by 2035 (14.5 MtCO₂ reduction), though this would require an additional EUR 2.0–5.3 billion for H₂-DRI capacity expansion. Creating a favourable investment environment will be essential, requiring robust financial support mechanisms and de-risking policies to attract funding for these low-carbon steelmaking projects. By decarbonising its steel sector, Ukraine has the opportunity to rebuild a stronger, more resilient economy while contributing to global emissions reduction goals. #GreenTransition #Steel #UkraineRecovery #SustainableDevelopment #Decarbonisation
