𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗟𝗮 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀? 🫧 In bioprocessing, 𝘬𝘓𝘢—the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient—is critical. It measures the efficiency of oxygen transfer from gas to liquid in a bioreactor. A high 𝘬𝘓𝘢 rate means a bioreactor can deliver more oxygen to cells precisely when and where it’s needed, supporting faster and more efficient cell culture processes at larger scales. 📈 Our Membrane Stirrer offers 15x the surface area of classic headspace aeration at 2L, enabling significantly greater gas transfer while minimizing shear forces. By optimizing low-shear 𝘬𝘓𝘢 rates, we ensure that sensitive cells grow consistently and predictably, even in commercial-scale systems of up to 200L. All without the need for (external) bubble aeration! In the attached graph, you can see data comparing tip speed and 𝘬𝘓𝘢 to conventional systems!💡 #BioThrust #Bioreactor #kLa #Celltherapy

Info
We are BioThrust, a biotech startup based in Germany that brings cell production to industrial scales. Our bionic bioreactor includes an artificial lung, providing stress-free cultivation conditions to achieve higher cell concentrations and quality. Through a unique and patented membrane architecture, we provide bubble-free gas exchange for the process. The formation of foam is completely avoided. Our membranes allow you to increase your space-time yield by up to 250%. By efficiently scaling the cell cultivation process, we help provide affordable stem cell therapies as well as driving progress in other sectors like clean meat and synthetic biologics. We are a spin-off from the RWTH Aachen, on a mission to make stem cell therapy accessible for everyone.

𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝘁! 🛫 When choosing a bioreactor for cell therapy manufacturing, scalability may not be the first thing you think about, but it will make or break a production process down the line! And, as far as we are concerned, 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 requires 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺. ✅ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? The secret to true scalability lies in the consistent environment our bioreactor design provides, regardless of vessel size. With our innovative Membrane Stirrer, we've eliminated the need for external (bubble) aeration, ensuring uniform gas transfer conditions throughout. Plus, the symmetrical design maintains predictable mixing patterns as you scale up. Unfortunately, designing such a bioreactor requires quite a lot of CFD simulation and measurement, keeping our engineers Moritz, Florian and Lukas busy 👨🔬. But at least we also get some nice pictures out of it! 📸 Important: The shear rates below were calculated at very high RPMs, optimized for microbiological processes, and are therefore quite high. Low-shear cell therapy specific simulations at <100 RPM will follow shortly! #BioThrust #Bioreactor #Scaleup #Celltherapy

Very interesting post by our CEO Patrick Bongartz that shows the difference in foam formation between classic bubble-aeration and our Membrane Stirrer. No foam, no problems! 😆
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲? 🤔 If you’ve seen my posts, you may have noticed the terms “𝘣𝘶𝘣𝘣𝘭𝘦-𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯” and “𝘧𝘰𝘢𝘮 𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.” But if you’re new to bioreactors, you might wonder what foaming actually looks like. As shown in the pictures, traditional bubble aeration can cause significant foaming, like a fizzy drink 🍹 😉. This not only reduces usable reactor volume but also often requires additional overflow capture systems, adding complexity. With our bubble-free aeration technology, there’s no foam at any scale—allowing up to 50% 📈 more working volume and a substantial boost in efficiency! #BioThrust #ComfyCell #Nofoam #foamistheenemy #nofoamparty

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗧𝗵𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗳𝘆𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸? 🧐 We often hear, “Your bioreactor looks cool! How does it work?” and we're always excited to share the details! Let’s dive in. 🎯 1. Our proprietary Membrane Stirrer combines aeration and mixing into one sleek component, at any scale. The blade-like design creates gentle circular flow patterns at both the top and bottom of the stage, ensuring uniform, low-shear mixing of media. 2. The dense hollow fibers that make up the membrane are continuously flushed with gas. Since these fibers have no pores, gas molecules diffuse through the molecular structure, facilitating extremely efficient bubble-free gas transfer. Interested in learning more? 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵! 🧪💓🎃 In the spirit of Halloween, we’re excited to share some fascinating "Frankenstein science" (as Patrick always calls it) from our collaboration with Kurt Pfannkuche & lab at the University of Cologne. To advance organoid-based heart therapies, we seeded over 200,000 embryoid bodies in our 2L bioreactor. After just 7 days of differentiation, we generated more than 200 million functional cardiomyocytes (picture below) that actually started beating, just like real hearts! Spooky, isn’t it?
