COP29 is almost over, and observers have been disappointed with the pace of progress and decisions made so far. Yet, the urgency to address climate change couldn’t be greater. Here, we share the viewpoint of Daniel Hölder, Head of Global Policy and Markets at BayWa r.e. AG on COP29 🌐 It is virtually certain that 2024 will become the hottest year on record (https://lnkd.in/eFvhpTfF) with climate disasters in Spain and Florida leading the UN to label 2024 a “masterclass in climate destruction” (https://lnkd.in/dQa9UQbS). Following the recent Presidential election, the US is expected to withdraw from the Paris Agreement for a second time in 2025 (https://lnkd.in/dmVfQm2a). 🌱So how do we turn the challenge of climate change on its head and talk more about the opportunities? Despite COP28 having mixed success, progress was made – notably the goal of tripling renewable energy capacity and moving away from fossil fuels. Participants at COP29 now need to build on this momentum and deliver bigger and better results – ensuring that rhetoric makes way for concrete actions and measures. Below are some of the key ways that this can happen: 🔰Commit to the fossil fuel phase-out: The time for “transitioning away” has passed and clear measures are needed. 🔰Accelerate the green energy transition: For COP28’s ambitious goal to count for anything, all parties must invest in renewable technologies and support policies that facilitate a swift transition to a sustainable energy future. 🔰Grow ambitions and commitments: To stay in line with the Paris Agreement and the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, nations must invest more into their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). COP29 is an early opportunity to set more ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and implement robust policies to achieve them. 🔰Deliver on climate justice and finance: The wealthiest countries must fulfil their commitments to support more vulnerable, developing nations in their climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. 🔰Find nature-based solutions: Protecting and restoring our natural ecosystems is crucial for both climate mitigation and adaptation. 🔰Embrace global cooperation and multilateralism: The global challenge of climate change requires a global response. In reaction to a year of political upheaval worldwide, nations must use the opportunity of COP29 to foster international cooperation, to ensure that all countries can effectively address climate change. COP29 cannot be “just another COP”. It demands bold leadership and unwavering commitment, and must signal a turning point in our collective efforts to secure a sustainable and resilient future for all. #COP29 #EnergyTransition #ClimateChange

We are thrilled to announce that the new VDE SPEC 90038 has been published, marking a significant milestone for the quality of solar modules. 🌞🔋 At BayWa r.e., we are proud to have contributed to this important standard as part of the dedicated working group. This achievement underscores our commitment to advancing the solar industry and ensuring the highest quality standards for solar technology. The VDE SPEC 90038 is a comprehensive Solar Module Quality Standard (SMQS) that outlines stringent requirements for the production, documentation, and testing of photovoltaic (PV) modules. It is divided into three parts: - Production Requirements and Documentation: Ensures that all PV modules are manufactured under consistent and high-quality conditions. - Measurement and Testing Procedures: Defines the methods for assessing module performance to guarantee reliability and efficiency. - Production Monitoring: Establishes ongoing quality control processes to maintain long-term module performance. This new standard will streamline the purchasing process and provide clear guidelines for both manufacturers and operators, ensuring maximum safety and longevity of solar modules. Thank you to everyone involved in this collaborative effort. Together, we are driving the future of renewable energy! 🌍💚 #BayWaRE #SolarEnergy #RenewableEnergy #QualityStandards #VDE #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/gvVAmgHx ABO Energy, ASG Energie AG, BayWa r.e. This week, Pondera took BayWa r.e. Benelux on a field trip! Renewable energy consultants Erik Holtslag and Maarten Graveland took us out to the field to visit a wind measurement system. The Windcube is a LiDAR system, which measures the movement of particles in the air by shooting laser beams into the sky up to a height of 300 meters. This system detects wind speeds over a longer period, and can be used to determine the yield of a (potential) wind farm. Fun fact: the Windcube is itself powered by renewable energy, surrounded by a wall of salvaged solar panels. Back at the office, Erik and Maarten presented about the application of wind data for the development of a wind farm. Wind measurements can be extremely complex, but in the end, they determine whether a wind farm is feasible or not. Overall, it was a fun and enriching day, and our team looks forward to applying these insights to our own projects in the near future together with Pondera. #windmeasurement #LiDAR #windcube #windenergy #onshorewind #renewableenergy #bwrebenelux #bwreNL
