Let’s discover a new built-environment start-up in Munich! Last week, we had the pleasure of meeting Marlene Stechl, co-founder of HopfON . #HopfON is an innovative startup focussing on the development of sustainable building materials using hop harvest waste. Marlenes’ vision to create eco-friendly, high-performance materials made of waste material is truly inspiring, and we are excited to see how their work will shape a more sustainable future. It was great to learn more about Hopfon’s mission and how they’re revolutionizing the way we think about waste in construction. Looking forward to seeing their continued success! 🏗️♻️ HopfON is a Start-up based in Munich, founded in 2022 by Marlene Stechl and Thomas Rojas Sonderegger. They developed sustainable building materials from hop harvest waste. HopfON is supported by Technical University of Munich. As a first business case HopfON developed acoustic panels tested in the NEXT MANNHEIM project. What we learned about hop: Ⓜ️The Hallertau in Bavaria is the center of hop cultivation and research in Germany. The region produces more than 80% of the annual German hop harvest. With a total area of around 172 km² and more than 800 individual hop farms. Ⓜ️Hop can be sweet. Hop can be bitter 😊 Ⓜ️Only 20% of the annual hop harvest (the flowers of the hop plant) is used for beer production, while 80% is not used and are composted, used as fertilizer, used for the production of biogas or are disposed of as waste. Acoustic panels are usually produced from PU foams, styrofoams, MDF board (pressed wood and glue) or mineral wool, all linear materials which are problematic to recycle. Hop waste is a perfect alternative for a circular alternative using waste as a resource, saving CO2 emissions and being biodegradable. Thus, the development of HopfON is a great example for a circular economy in the built environment. . Let’s build the future together! 🌱 Ⓜ️♾ #HopfON #TheGreatHope #SustainableConstruction #CircularEconomy #EcoFriendlyMaterials #GreenBuilding #Innovation #ClimateAction #HopWaste

Applying #circularsolutions requires an open mind, new perspectives, creativity, and lots of collaboration. The #CircularHackfest 2024, organized by UnternehmerTUM MakerSpace GmbH I XPLORE and CIRCULAR REPUBLIC provided the perfect mix of all these elements, plus delicious food to keep the energy going over 5 intense days. The week kicked off on October 7th, when teams were assigned a challenge, either from BMW Group, BSH Home Appliances Group or #CircularMunich. Participants met each other and learned the details of the challenge that morning. With limited time and a wide range of professional backgrounds and skills, the highest priority was to align themselves with the goal. The challenge from Circular Munich was straightforward: double the collection of #ewaste in Munich and double the lifetime of existing electronics. Both goals are critical for recovering valuable resources and decreasing the extraction of new resources. Consumer awareness of the issue and motivation to act were two key aspects to address. After researching, prototyping, conducting surveys, and sometimes starting from scratch again, it was time for the teams to present their solutions to the Hackfest jury and the rest of the audience at the Hack’N’Talk finale. The solution took two approaches to activate the citizens of Munich: ⭕ RE:CO Box to collect devices at supermarkets by first scanning, recognizing, and calculating the emissions footprint of the device. It is convenient and raises awareness to encourage individuals to bring in more end-of-life devices for collection. ⭕ RE:CO App to scan and recognize a device, understand the user preferences, and provide tailored, local options. Charities, repair shops, DIY fixes, and 2nd hand markets will extend the device life cycle, while disposal options at nearby retailers offer a convenient way to rapidly increase collection rates. The team was delighted to win the prize of #BestCircularImpact! Well done to challenge winners Lorena Maldonado Christiana Walcher Giada G. Clemens Saur Georg Vonhasselt Dr. Thomas Kisler Yash Athalye @Camila Varela A shout out to our CM members Michael D'heur for sponsoring the challenge and to Sabine Müller for mentoring participants. “My name is Najet Ben Mabrouk, I come from Tunisia”. I am thrilled to be in #Munich with #CircularMunich as part of the #CrossCulturefellowship. My objective is to learn by doing, network, get into action, explore Munich best practices ( in the pharmaceutical , culture & electronic industries) to build my expertise in the topic of #circularcities. About my work & impact: I am a project coordinator at the “She Leads Oasis”, an initiative aiming to empower local women's cooperatives, by enhancing their skills in leadership & agility, governance, #circulareconomy, #genderequality & #climatechange among other things. “She leads oasis” 2.0 became a scalable initiative funded by WWF-North Africa, managed by Arab Institute for Human Rights المعهد العربي لحقوق الإنسان. Our dream began just from a podcast, then with support of the #CatalystForChange program ( Konrad Adenauer ) our initiative grew to offer other services: diagnostic, fundraising, capacity building, round tables… Back to present life in Munich, I am eager to connect with fellow advocates, NGOs, engineering and civil society activists who believe in circular economy and sustainability. Together we can exchange ideas, best practices, and creative solutions towards circularity. Feel free to DM me or meet me at the Werk1’s public coffee shop area till the end of November 2024. I am looking forward to connecting with you! Ⓜ️♾
