The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory will be the largest and most powerful observatory for gamma-ray astronomy.
Info
Welcome to our Universe... the Gamma-Ray Universe! The CTAO (Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory) will be the world’s largest and most powerful observatory for gamma-ray astronomy. With more than 60 telescopes located in the northern and southern hemispheres, the CTAO will explore the very high-energy Universe within an unprecedented energy range (20 GeV – 300 TeV) and accuracy. The Observatory will seek to understand the impact of high-energy particles in the evolution of cosmic systems, to gain insight into the most extreme sources in the Universe, such as black holes, or to explore frontiers in physics, such as dark matter. The CTAO will be the first observatory of its kind to operate as an open, proposal-driven observatory providing public access to its high-level science data and software products, making the potential for discoveries limitless.

💡We could ask ChatGPT how this year's Nobel Prize in Physics on artificial intelligence (AI) impacts astronomy, but we prefer first-hand information from some of the experts developing AI software and tools within the CTAO. Read the second issue of our newsletter, Flashpoint, where Daniel Nieto (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and Matthieu Heller (Université de Genève) break down how AI and machine learning will change data analysis for the CTAO and other next-generation observatories. 👉 Subscribe to Flashpoint and stay tuned for future articles. #CTAO #CTAOflashpoint #news #newsletter #AI #machinelearning #astronomy #nobelprize

Greetings from the CTAO-North! 👋 This week, CTAO Managing Director, Stuart McMuldroch, and Construction Programme Manager, Volker Heinz, traveled to the Canary Islands for a productive visit with our hosting partners at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and colleagues from the CTAO LST Collaboration. The team was warmly welcomed at the IAC Headquarters in Tenerife by IAC Director, Valentín Martínez, marking the first official meeting between the two directors since Valentín recently assumed this role. Hosted by Ramón García López, Principal Investigator of the CTAO group at the IAC, the visit was thoughtfully coordinated with a full schedule of meetings and tours to maximise its outcome. Alongside Juan Cortina (Chair of the Institutional Board of the LST Collaboration) and Javier Herrera (ORM Department Head), the group met to discuss key issues for the site’s development and toured the IACTEC building, a state-of-the-art facility where the CTAO telescopes’ cameras are tested before installation. The visit continued beyond Tenerife, with the team traveling to the CTAO-North site at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) on La Palma. There, they joined Patricia Márquez (LST Telescope Manager) to see the current status of the telescopes and align on a unified approach to advance the shared goals. In the photos, the entire team is seen standing alongside the LSTs in various stages of construction. We’re excited about the progress being made and can’t wait to see the future telescopes ready to capture the wonders of the Universe! ✨ https://lnkd.in/egTHDq3A #CTAO #LSTCollaboration #IAC #Astronomy #LaPalma #Cooperation #Innovation

✨ https://lnkd.in/egTHDq3A #CTAO #LSTCollaboration #IAC #Astronomia #LaPalma #Cooperacion #Innovacion

An astrophysics superstar visited the LST-1 yesterday! 🤩 World-renowned astrophysicist Dame Susan Jocelyn Bell Burnell visited the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma, Spain, and took a tour of the Large-Sized Telescope (LST) protoype, the LST-1, on the CTAO-North site. She was guided by Alice Donini, the LST deputy project and telescope manager, in the company of spokesperson Masahiro Teshima, project manager Daniel Mazin and telescope manager Patricia Marquez, offering Dr. Bell Burnell an in-depth tour of one of the most advanced astronomical instruments, not just on the island, but also in the world. Dr. Bell Burnell discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967 and is being honoured with a commemorative plaque on the Paseo de las Estrellas (the Walk of Stars of Science) during AstroFest La Palma, a festival celebrating astronomy and La Palma as a destination for astrotourism.
