New in Open Access: Velázquez, Painter & Curator, by Julia Vázquez (Max Planck Institute for Art History). This richly illustrated book is the first to address the curatorial career of #DiegoVelázquez, painter to King Philip IV of Spain and chamberlain of his royal palace. It investigates the role that Velázquez played in overseeing the display of the Habsburg art collection, then the richest in the western world, and the role, in turn, that this practice played in his creative trajectory between his arrival at the Spanish court in 1623 and his death in 1660. Download this book now at https://lnkd.in/gn2MZvRs. Images: 1) Domenico Tintoretto, Penitent Magdalene, ca. 1590. Gilded frame designed by Diego Velázquez. Courtesy Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid. 2) While in Italy, Diego Velázquez had arranged the production and purchase of a set of twelve bronze sculptures of lions modeled on the Medici lions in the Loggia dei Lanzi. Cast by Matteo Bonuccelli and gilded by Girolamo Ferrer, the sculptures were sent to Spain in 1652, where all twelve were installed as supports for the six porphyry tables that were already in the Royal Palace. Only surviving painting in a series of four, designed by Velázquez for the Hall of Mirrors at the Royal Palace. Courtesy Museo Nacional del Prado. Madrid.

🎄 Deck the halls! Many thanks to our team in Boston for the warm welcome last week. After a company update from Carsten Buhr, Josephine Hoppe, Manuela Gerlof, Maurits van den Boogert and Pablo Dominguez Andersen, it was time for holiday cheer galore – with De Gruyter, Paradigm and Brill staff coming together for festive drinks, sliders, and a Celtics game. Need we mention, the Celtics won. Big thanks to our US team for bringing the fun and games to the De Gruyter Brill family. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃 #DeGruyterBrill #Americas #Boston Paradigm Publishing Services
