The global coalition for democracy
Info
Democracy International is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that was formally established in June 2011 as a registered membership association according to German non-profit law (eingetragener Verein e.V.). Before, Democracy International had existed as a loose network of democracy activists since 2002. There are people all around the world who commit their lives to strengthening citizens' participation and direct democracy. Democracy International supports such democracy activists in building campaigns and organisations. It shares knowledge and legal expertise on direct democracy. Also Democracy International campaigns for more democracy at the transnational level. Democracy International's goals are to give citizens a direct say in political decision-making and to make governments more accountable. Democracy International is an independent membership organisation funded by fees and individual donations.

The #US presidential #elections were less than desirable for democracy advocates. But American citizens had the opportunity to vote on not only the president but also on numerous ballot initiatives statewide! 🇺🇸 Voters across 41 states decided on a total of 146 statewide #ballot measures. Through ballot #initiatives, both #citizens and #legislators can propose new laws or amendments to state constitutions. This year, the hot topics included abortion and electoral reform. The amount of #abortion-related ballot initiatives this year was the most on record for a single year - and the citizens took to the ballot box to express their support for reproductive #rights in 8 out of 10 states 📝 Check out our previous posts to learn more about how ballot initiatives work and information about the hot topics in this year’s election!✨

Exciting News for Democracy Research!🌍🗳️ We at Democracy International e.V. are happy to announce that the project TWIN4DEM: Strengthening Democratic Resilience Through Digital Twins, starting in 2025, has won the Horizon Europe grant! Together with 11 European partners, this project will use cutting-edge Computational Social Science (CSS) methods like natural language processing and dynamic simulations to investigate how democracies decline and, more importantly, how we can prevent it. By creating the first-ever digital twins of political systems in Czechia, France, Hungary, and the Netherlands, the team aims to provide new insights into the causes and effects of democratic erosion. A huge thank you to our partners: 🇳🇱Erasmus University Rotterdam 🇫🇷 Université catholique de Lille 🇩🇪 GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences 🇮🇹 Fundazione Bruno Kessler 🇸🇪 Linnaeus University 🇷🇴 Babes-Bolyai University 🇭🇺 Társadalomtudományi Kutatóközpont 🇨🇿 Charles University 🇪🇸 Eticas Research and Consulting 🇬🇷 Diadikasia Business Consulting We are excited to see how this innovative project unfolds over the next two years! 🚀 https://lnkd.in/eyzDUVPz.

Our team is back from their US Election Monitoring Tour, so we can finally share with you a summary of the many activities, meetings, and experiences of the trip 🇺🇸 While the results of the Presidential election are alarming for US democracy and democracies around the world, many of the initiatives and campaigns that the team met, such as Prop 139 to enshrine abortion rights in the Arizona state constitution, passed, demonstrating that democracy in the US is much more than the election of the President alone 🗳️✨
