About us
Iswe is a social impact foundation. We are dedicated to finding ways to put people at the heart of social and political decision-making to solve some of society’s greatest challenges. Our team has decades of experience in democratic innovation. Initiatives include the Global Assembly for COP26, Good Help and the Funders Initiative for Civil Society. Our work is founded on strong values, including openness, transparency and humility. We believe that when ‘I’ (an individual) becomes ‘we’ (part of the collective), the results are transformational.

It’s been another important moment for the Global Citizens’ Assembly for People and Planet this time at COP29. As we build towards having the new institution in place for COP30. The project is being spearheaded by COP30 hosts Government of Brazil huge thanks to Ana Toni, Alice de Moraes Amorim Vogas Carla Bezerra Gustavo Westmann Renato Simoes and so many others… In order to make COP30, the People’s COP, we’re laying down infrastructure so that anyone anywhere can participate. To achieve this we need your help. 🎪 Encouraging people to run Community Assemblies (Starting March 2025) 🎪 Community assemblies will be run in schools, community groups, companies, sports clubs, religious groups, by anyone anywhere. Thank you to everyone who who joined our event at the Regional Climate Foundations Pavillion at COP29. The event explored how to accelerate climate action through a Global Citizens' Assembly for COP30 and beyond and highlights included: 🌟 A timely reminder by Diego Casaes ( Climate Emergency Collaboration Group ) that "inclusion shouldn't be a [tick] box exercise" and that the "the focus of inclusion should be to elevate the political risk of not acting". 🌟 A powerful observation by Alice de Moraes Amorim Vogas (Government of Brazil) that "at the end of the day, regardless of how we [make] decisions, change happens from the ground up. [This is what] we need to bring to the COP process" so "it's key to take a territorial approach". 🌟 An insightful statement by Leonildes Nazar (Institute for Climate and Society): "what drives people to take action is not policies, it's how they connect and how they feel" followed by a vital question: "How do we build hope and belonging?" Thank you to all of our panellists for their contributions, to Noora Firaq 🇬🇧 🇲🇻 (Climate Outreach) for moderating the event, and to The African Climate Foundation, Energy Foundation China, European Climate Foundation, Iniciativa Climática de México, Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, Tara Climate Foundation and ViriyaENB for hosting us!
Going to be at COP29? We're ending the week with some brilliant news ✨don't we all need it?✨ Reema Patel is joining Iswe to contribute to the co-creation of the Global Citizens' Assembly as a permanent institution. We feel very lucky to have Reema onboard. Her wisdom and expertise, grounded in years of research and practice in democratic innovation, will be invaluable to this endeavour.
Research consultant specialising in participation and people centred research in AI, tech, climate science and economy.
So, some exciting personal and professional news to share.... I'm incredibly excited to announce that I’ll be joining Iswe Foundation to contribute to co-creation, design, and delivery of the Global Citizens' Assembly institution with partners, ramping up from 2025! This project very recently launched in New York, at the #UN Summit of the Future. This global project, which has already piloted once with UN backing in 2021, will continue to bring people together from across the world to deliberate via a core assembly, selected through civic lottery and community assemblies, to support wide participation. In 2025, with the Coalition for a Global Citizen's Assembly we will be delivering the next iteration in preparation for #COP30 in #Brazil, to ensure we widen public participation in climate governance so that as we accelerate our journey towards a low-carbon world, all voices can be heard. We also aim to bring diverse voices from around the world together to tackle other cross-cutting and systemic challenges such as health or AI. I am looking forward to working with an incredible team to create a global framework to empower meaningful participation. Looking forward to working with partners and friends such as GloCAN, Haidee Bell United Nations Nicole Curato G1000 European Climate Foundation Shared Future CIC and the Brazilian government. I am especially interested in the role this work can play in building the field of participatory democracy going forward.... Find out more about this excellent project here : https://lnkd.in/es5qxDWs Stay tuned for more updates! #GlobalAssembly #GlobalCitizensAssembly #DeliberativeDemocracy #InclusivePolicymaking #GlobalGovernance #COP30

Thank you so much Paul van Zyl for hosting our conversation with Ben Tolhurst and Ben Scott. And thank you Jon Alexander for making it possible. We missed you and Clare Farrell, who couldn't be there either. We explored the challenges of democratic innovation in the digital age. I shared some of our work at Iswe Foundation to build new institutions centered around citizens such as a permanent Global Citizens' Assembly for People and Planet www.gcacoalition.org You can now watch the recording of our event and hear more about what I mean by system reinforcing vs. system disrupting deliberative processes. https://lnkd.in/eq4_XfvD I unpacked some of the findings from my latest research at The Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST): "How can citizens' assemblies help navigate the systemic transformations required by the polycrisis?" https://lnkd.in/e3Jptkrv Thanks again Paul and the team at The Conduit, particularly Peres K. for making these conversations possible.
At last month’s Green Jobs Revolution, I had the pleasure of hosting an insightful session: Political Voice: The Impact of Democratic Innovation in the Digital Age. We explored: ↳ How innovative democratic practices, powered by technology can empower citizens and build consensus on critical issues. ↳ How media and technology are becoming indispensable tools for building consensus, bridging divides and creating a more equitable and sustainable future. As Ben Scott, CEO of Reset Tech, pointed out: “We live in an information ecosystem that doesn’t reward consensus, it amplifies division. We need to hack the system, not just to win, but to lose more slowly until we can find sustainable solutions.” Claire Mellier, Knowledge and Practice Lead at ISWE Foundation and Ben Tolhurst, Director at Business Declares, shared practical examples of how citizen assemblies and democratic innovation can foster informed engagement and shape better policies for the green transition. Curious to hear more? Watch this video https://lnkd.in/en8cHUma —- 👉 Join us at the Green Economy Forum on 6 November to continue this vital conversation and explore how to finance the green transition https://lnkd.in/eYitsUka 🌱 I founded The Conduit, an international members' club, to bring together people who are committed to creating a just, prosperous and sustainable future.

Brilliant op-ed by Ana Toni, Brazilian National Secretary for Climate Change and Laurence Tubiana, President of the European Climate Foundation and key architect of the Paris Agreement, which makes the case for a permanent Global Citizens' Assembly. "Drawing on the model of the World Social Forum, what we need now is a Global Social-Climate Forum, or a Global Citizens’ Assembly for People and Planet, to bring citizens together from every country, not just to chart a collective path forward, but to reimagine our politics and encourage a global ethical stock-take. This would be an opportunity for humanity to come together, to understand each other’s aspirations and anxieties, and to co-create a green transition that benefits everyone. Rather than leaving anyone behind, we can forge a new social contract rooted in solidarity, equity, and fairness."
