𝗔𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀  𝗣𝗙𝗔𝗦: 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘀 - 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟯 In the final part of this series, Policy Officer, Donata Chiari, interviews Jaroslav Moško of the Department of Power Engineering of the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague (UCT Prague) & Institute of Chemical Process Fundamentals CAS, v. v. i., about the potential of pyrolysis for sewage sludge management and PFAS elimination. Pyrolysis is emerging as a 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲-𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 for managing sewage sludge and addressing persistent pollutants like PFAS. This innovative thermochemical process not only transforms waste into valuable products like biochar but also 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 when operated under specific conditions. At temperatures above 400°C, 𝗣𝗙𝗔𝗦 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, with efficiency shaped by factors such as reactor design, biomass residence time, and the reaction atmosphere. Additionally, proper treatment of syngas ensures any short-chain PFAS are 𝗻𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱, making pyrolysis a sustainable option for waste treatment and pollutant removal. Carbon Removals into EU law. The Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming Framework (CRCF) has been published in the official journal of the EU on December 6th. It will enter into force 20 days following the date of publication, thus December 27th. This brings the legislative process, which started with the commission proposal in November 2022, to an end. We have allocated a lot of time and energy into making BCR a part of this. Now, we are focussing on the elaboration of the methodologies in teh form of Delegated Acts for permanent removals, particularly on BCR.
