Why EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) is a Sustainable Choice A new Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) by Stybenex, the Dutch EPS National Association, highlights the environmental benefits of EPS cooler boxes compared to alternatives like cardboard. Key Insights from the Study: 1️⃣ Lower Environmental Impact: • EPS cooler boxes have a significantly smaller footprint compared to cardboard-based “Papercooler” and “EcoCooler” alternatives. • Cardboard options were found to have 191% and 55% larger environmental footprints, respectively. 2️⃣ Reduced Freshwater Toxicity: • EPS boxes cause significantly less harm to freshwater ecosystems. The impact of cardboard alternatives is up to 201 times greater. 3️⃣ Lower Global Warming Potential: • EPS boxes outperform cardboard in mitigating global warming impacts from land use changes, with cardboard showing up to 75 times more impact. 4️⃣ Resource Efficiency: • EPS boxes consume fewer fossil fuel resources, with a 1.33 times lower depletion impact compared to alternatives. Debunking the Myths: EPS is often unfairly criticized for being environmentally harmful.
