SPOTLIGHT ON FABULENS, GERMANY. Welcome to Optica! We’re excited to welcome Fabulens to the Optica corporate family! To explore their innovative solutions and vision for collaboration within the photonics community, I spoke with Jacques Duparré and Frank Wippermann at their headquarters in Jena, Germany. What does Fabulens do? FabuLens GmbH specializes in producing miniature imaging lenses designed for compact camera modules. These lenses combine the imaging quality of injection moulding with the cost-efficiency of wafer optics. Since no wafer is involved, producing aspheres and meniscus with a high radius of curvature is possible, opening up new opportunities in high-performance, affordable imaging applications. What sets Fabulens apart? Their expertise lies in UV replication with shrinkage compensation, enabling the production of larger lens diameters that mimic the performance of injection-moulded lenses. This breakthrough allows for exceptional optical quality while maintaining competitive pricing. Applications and markets Fabulens is already targeting key sectors such as: Single-use #endoscopy: Delivering high-quality medical imaging at an accessible cost. Automotive: Meeting the stringent demands of in-car optics. Smartphone optics (future goal): Aiming to revolutionize consumer device imaging. Their lenses stand out because of their polymers' thermal resilience, which can withstand temperatures of up to 260°C during reflow soldering. This capability is rare in polymers typically used in injection moulding, making Fabulens a game-changer for high-tech optical systems. JenaWirtschaft zu Gast bei FabuLens: Revolutionäre Optikproduktion in Jena   Gemeinsam mit dem Jenaer Oberbürgermeister Dr. Thomas Nitzsche und TIP-Geschäftsführer Dr. Thomas Ganz besuchten wir am vergangenen Donnerstag das Hightech-StartUp FabuLens GmbH im Technologie- und Innovationspark Jena. Mit Sitz in Leipzig und Forschung in Jena arbeitet das Team aus zehn Expert:innen daran, die Zukunft der Optik mitzugestalten. 🌍🔬    Seit 2023 entwickelt FabuLens, eine Tochter der SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen, aufbauend auf den technischen Durchbrüchen der mcd - modern camera designs GmbH eine innovative Replikationstechnologie, um hochpräzise Kunststoffoptiken für Smartphone Kameramodule in sehr großen Stückzahlen herzustellen. Das Besondere: anstatt auf konventionelle, z.B. thermische, Methoden zu setzen, welche sehr viele Anlagen unter Reinraumbedingungen und viel Energie benötigen, stellt FabuLens auf hoch-parallelisierte und -automatisierte Verfahren mittels Aushärtung durch UV-Licht bei Raumtemperatur um. Diese neue Technologie benötigt nur 5 Prozent des Energieverbrauchs herkömmlicher Prozesse, revolutioniert damit den Fertigungsprozess für miniaturisierte, hochpräzise Abbildungsoptiken und ist gleichzeitig deutlich kostengünstiger.   Das Unternehmen will so optische Komponenten auch in sehr großer Stückzahl in Europa herstellen und dabei neue Maßstäbe setzen – nachhaltig, kosteneffizient und innovativ. „Da derartige Hochvolumen-Technologien ansonsten entweder ursprünglich schon in Fernost, insbesondere Taiwan oder China, beheimatet sind, oder nach ersten Entwicklungen sofort dahin abwandern, sind wir für die Gründung der Tochter-Gesellschaft durch die SPRIN-D sehr dankbar. Ansonsten hätten wir wahrscheinlich keine Finanzierung für ein solches Unterfangen hier in Deutschland sichern können“, stellte Geschäftsführer der FabuLens Jacques Duparré fest. When it comes to #production of #optics, most echnologies (except for high-precision additive manufacturing #AM) are not suited for #prototyping and small series production, particularly for #medical, #automotive, and #consumer markets. Novel designs are usually evaluated theoretically, and if they have to be practically tested, their fabrication is currently very expensive. #Cost is an issue, as always, hindering simple testing of new lens designs in very small quantities. Technologies which are capable to overcome this obstacle and which are suited for #volumeproduction, feeding the hungry consumer market, are needed. Part of the fees are used for workshop costs (catering, event website, tech and service staff, administration). The rest is used for our #educational projects for #children, #adolescents and #adults to better prepare people for #future challenges and to #enable them to cope with them in the here and now. We want to start with #photonicsdriven #technologies, but we are completely tech-open, also holistically considering #economic, #ecologic, and #social aspects. This helps to generate #workforce (in Germany alone, according to the latest news, we have about 700,000 vacancies), but also to overcome existing gaps in our societies in order to counteract the polarization of #society and to prevent for hate, fake news, and harassment. We need more #knowledgedriven approaches. In addition, our companies can make a difference and creating more business in demonstrating a strong commitment for ecology, people and providing useful technologies to their customers.
