WAREHAM, MASS. (WHDH) It started with just a simple puff of smoke. Then moments later, the fire spread, fast. A fire on Sunday in Onset caused major damage to a hobby shop. The town’s fire chief says the cause was lithium-ion batteries. We like to repeat over and over again, because our passion is protecting people, animals and buildings from the consequences of a lithium-ion battery fire. Modern electric wheelchairs have found their way into hospitals. They make life much easier for patients and staff. But are hospital managers aware of the risks involved in handling the powerful lithium-ion batteries in these electric wheelchairs? Often there is a lack of knowledge about this or they are underestimated, which can lead to a catastrophe, as batteries are now the most common cause of fire. In Germany alone, one in five fires last year was caused by batteries. What exactly are the risks of a lithium-ion battery? We are often asked this question. Here is some information: A battery consists of many individual cells. If just one of them is defective, e.g. due to a manufacturing defect, a shock, falling, moisture penetrating, or something else, then a so-called thermal runaway can occur, which is a thermal runaway of a battery cell, which leads to a chain reaction. This always results in a hydrogen explosion, fire with extremely high temperatures,s and the release of a highly toxic smoke-gas mixture that contains hydrofluoric acid, among other things. If a wheelchair battery has an output of e.g. 500 Wh, a thermal runaway will produce approx. 25,000 liters of toxic fumes, which will contaminate everything it comes into contact with. The result is that all contaminated areas can only be entered by specialized companies, who then have to carry out very complex decontamination, which can take easily weeks. Hospitals in different countries are using RACLAN boxes to safely charge and store electric wheelchair batteries. Our boxes are tested and certified by the German DMT GROUP / TÜV NORD GROUP. Forestry workers have one of the hardest and most dangerous jobs. Their machines and tools, such as chainsaws, are exposed to extreme conditions. Only a few people know that professional power tools with powerful lithium-ion batteries are now also being used here. A real endurance test for the batteries. But there is also a significant risk of forest fires because the lithium-ion batteries are not treated particularly carefully. They get knocked, fall, and often lie in the dry forest for hours. Everyone can imagine that this can easily lead to a thermal runaway. Dazu kommt noch die Gefahr der so genannten Tiefenentladung: Ist die Kapazität von Lithium-Ionen-Akkus (zum Beispiel von Elektro-Rasentrimmern) vollständig erschöpft, beginnen sie ebenfalls leicht zu brennen – gefährlich ist das bei der Überwinterung in kalten Kellern. Weiterhin kann das Herunterfallen, auch ohne äußerliche Beschädigung, die Lithium-Ionen Zellen im Akku beschädigen. Dies kann dann ohne Vorwarnung zu dem gefürchteten Thermal Runaway führen. Dabei kommt es zu einer Wasserstoffexplosion und anschließender Kettenreaktion der Zellen. Besonders gefährlich sind die dabei entstehenden giftigen Gase, die u.A. Flusssäure enthalten. Prävention ist die einzig sinnvolle Maßnahme, um sich vor den Folgen eines Akku Brandes zu schützen. Wer seine Lithium-Ionen-Akkus in einer vom DMT GROUP geprüften und zertifizierten RACLAN Box lädt und lagert ist garantiert sicher.
