gmp is strengthening its management team with three new partners! Jochen Köhn, Karsten Schillings and Jan Stolte are no strangers: All three have been part of the gmp team for many years and have distinguished themselves through their commitment and expertise. 👉 Jochen Köhn Jochen Köhn joined the gmp team in 1991, while still studying architecture at RWTH Aachen University. He has been a partner since 2025 and is responsible for contract design, fees and personnel development at the Berlin office. He has successfully managed numerous major projects. 👉 Karsten Schillings Karsten Schillings has been part of gmp in Hamburg since 2008, where he has been Head of Construction Management since 2015. He is our specialist for complex construction contracts. He lectured at HafenCity University Hamburg for ten years and at Wismar University of Applied Sciences. 👉Jan Stolte After studying at the TU Braunschweig and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Jan Stolte joined gmp in the Hamburg office in 2005. He specializes in office and administration buildings, conversion projects and buildings for teaching and research. Since it was founded in 1965 by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg, gmp has been managed by a circle of partners. Our architecture office von Gerkan, Marg and Partners was founded in Hamburg in 1965. To this day, we have completed more projects here than in any other city. Our colleagues work at two locations in the Hanseatic city - one of which is our headquarters on Elbchaussee in Othmarschen. The building, designed by Meinhard von Gerkan and completed in 1990, picks up on maritime elements. With its white facade and striking shape, it is reminiscent of a ship lying across the Elbe River from the port of Hamburg. A particular highlight is the rotunda on the top floor - a meeting room with a panoramic view of the Elbe, passing steamers and another Hamburg landmark: the Köhlbrand Bridge. Both our founding partner, Volkwin Marg, and Executive Partner Magdalena Weiß have their offices here. Currently, around 100 colleagues work at the Elbchaussee location. The Pressehaus am Alexanderplatz is a remarkable piece of Berlin’s architectural history. Built between 1970 and 1973 as the “Haus des Berliner Verlages”, it was designed by architects Karl-Ernst Swora, Rainer Hanslik, Günter Derdau, Waldemar Seifert and Gerhard Voss as a counterpart to the Axel Springer publishing building in West Berlin. We were proud to be responsible for the conversion and extension of this ensemble. We carefully reestablished the original facade, restored the long-hidden programmatic frieze of the press café and, with the ‘New Podium’, created a complementary new building that establishes an urban connection to the neighboring Scheunenviertel. The Pressehaus am Alexanderplatz was shortlisted for the DAM Prize 2025 and will be on display in the exhibition 'DAM Prize 2025 - The Best Buildings in/from Germany' at the DAM Ostend in Frankfurt am Main from February 1 to April 27, 2025. We are delighted that our renovation (UMBAU) of the Alsterschwimmhalle has been featured in DETAIL Architecture GmbH Magazine! Between 2020 and 2023, the Alsterschwimmhalle underwent extensive renovation, conversion, and extension. Balthasar Neumann Award 2025: On January 15, 2025, the European Prize for Architecture and Engineering was presented at the BAU trade fair in Munich. Our team received a commendation for the Hyparschale in Magdeburg. We are delighted to receive this recognition, which honors our efforts to restore and modernize Ulrich Müther's shell roof structure in accordance with historic preservation standards. We are glad to be able to have given this architectural icon a new lease of life as a venue for congresses and exhibitions after 20 years of vacancy. Stadt Hanau has commissioned gmp with the refurbishment of the Kaufhof building! We are very pleased about this exciting construction task - by converting the building, we can contribute to the development of the city so that it remains attractive for its residents in the future. The framework agreement comprises two service phases in the first step: Basic assessment and then preliminary planning with the aim of refurbishing the property in terms of energy efficiency and building services. In future, further measures of the agreement will include project planning, structural design, technical building services, building physics, fire protection and pollutant remediation. To award the planning services, the city carried out a negotiated award with a competitive tender, in which gmp's offer achieved the highest score. We are delighted that our UMBAU of the Alsterschwimmhalle was featured in Dezeen. From 2020 to 2023, the Alsterschwimmhalle was extensively renovated, converted and extended. The spectacular shell roof, the impressive interior with its 50-meter pool, and the facade construction were retained. “gmp Architekten's overhaul ensures the focal point of the structure remains its heritage-listed roof, which is formed of two soaring hyperbolic paraboloid structures crafted from prestressed concrete,” the magazine writes in its article. "The necessary extensions were carefully integrated into the overall ensemble with respect for the existing listed building," Dezeen quotes gmp's detailed design lead, Jörn Ortmann.
