🛰️ We can see more: Temperature 🌡️ Everyone knows what the temperature is. Everyone keeps track of it and looks at forecasts. ❄️🌥️ ➡️ What do we use it for at GREENSPIN? For us, too, temperature is a very basic parameter. It is more of a follower that goes along with almost every analysis, but it needs other parameters to really achieve something… Buuut: The other parameters need temperature to be complete and to make a valid statement, too. 💡 And sometimes temperature has its glorious moments: ✨ ❄️ In times of sudden frost, the temperature shows where, when and how badly crops have been damaged. The images show an extreme example of the North American cold wave in February 2021, resulting in significantly reduced crop production. ☀️ During a heat wave, temperature is one of the main parameters, along with water availability, to track the impact on crops. 🌾 Temperature is the basis for calculating the growing degree-day (GDD), which helps to predict crop development and the right time for pest control, for example. With our global temperature data from Deutscher Wetterdienst and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF, we have reliable datasets that are constant over time and space. Wussten Sie, dass Zuckerrüben und Kartoffeln unter so starkem Krankheitsbefall leiden, dass es eine Gefahr für die Versorgung in Deutschland darstellt? 🥔 🍠 SBR, Stolbur und Cercospora - die Krankheiten gibt es schon länger in Deutschland, aber seit 2022 nimmt die Verbreitung bedrohliche Ausmaße an. Stolbur beispielsweise verändert die Konsistenz der Zuckerrübe. Sie wird weich und biegbar wie Gummi. Das ist ein Problem für die Verarbeitung: Die Ernte- und Weiterverarbeitungsmaschinen sind nicht auf die „Gummirüben“ ausgelegt. Blätter lassen sich schlechter entfernen, wodurch beim Lagern auf den Feldern schnell die Kompostierung einsetzt. 🦠 🌱 Die „Gummirüben“ müssen also schnell verarbeitet werden. Zuckerhändler müssen wissen: Welche Felder sind wie stark vom Krankheitsbefall betroffen? Wann und wo müssen Rüben zur Weiterverarbeitung transportiert werden, damit sie nicht auf den Feldern verrotten? Wie ist die Auslastung der Verarbeitungsmaschinen? 🚜 🍠 Bisher erfolgt das Krankheitsmonitoring durch Bodenproben, beispielsweise durch die Landwirtschaftskammern der Bundesländer. Die sind häufig nicht repräsentativ für größere Regionen und geben nur Aufschluss über die Situation am Probenstandort. 🧪 💡 Gemeinsam mit unserem Industriepartner arbeiten wir daran, befallene Gebiete mithilfe von Hyperspektraldaten aus dem All zu erkennen. Dafür untersuchen wir Daten des neuen, deutschen Satellits #EnMAP vom Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V., dessen spektrale Auflösung deutlich höher ist als bei bisherigen Aufnahmen. 🛰️ 🌈 ➡️Wir wollen herausfinden: Lässt sich mit den Daten unterscheiden, ob die Zuckerrüben durch Krankheit oder durch klimatische Faktoren unter Stress stehen? Lassen sich die einzelnen Krankheiten auf den Anbauflächen unterscheiden? Zu welchem Zeitpunkt müssen die Daten für die Analyse erhoben werden? What does Trump have to do with Open Data? 🌐🔓 Donald Trump is back in office. Many fear what this will mean for international cooperation, climate protection or global trade. There are also concerns about open data: The US is a major provider of open data, including satellite imagery, temperature and precipitation data by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) or NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and crop forecasts for food-insecure countries from U.S. Agency for International Development. 🌍📊 🛰️ During his first term, he signed the Open Government Data Act, which requires government to make data publicly available by default. But he also relaxed data protection rules, making it harder to share data internationally because standards were not being met. What will happen this time? 🤔 What if… … he (or Elon Musk) cuts funding to institutions that provide open data because he consideres other things to be more important? 💸 ❌ ...he gets caught up in budget negotiations and there is a shutdown? Do you depend on a good winter wheat yield and want to know what the prospects are? 🌾 A major threat to winter wheat growth is a sudden drop in temperature to below freezing - unless there is snow cover to buffer the temperature for the crop. ❄️ 💡 📊 We have all the data you need for monitoring: winter wheat growing areas, snow cover, and temperature curves. Here you can see that winter wheat grows almost everywhere in Turkey. The second image shows the current snow cover in the country. As an example, we show the temperature curve in Erzurum province last year. As you can see, there was a sudden drop in temperature below zero at the end of January and the beginning of December. 🛰️ We can see more: Leaf Area Index🌿 The Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a crucial metric in agriculture. It measures the leaf area per unit ground area, providing insights into photosynthetic performance, plant growth and vegetation density. 🌿 🌾 🌲 Satellite-derived LAI is easy to calculate at low cost and over large areas, allowing long-term monitoring with comparable data. This gives it an advantage over time-consuming and expensive field data. 🛰️ Compared to another popular vegetation index, NDVI, LAI is a better indicator of plant biomass and saturates later in high biomass regions. The image shows tropical rainforest in central Democratic Republic of Congo. Where the NDVI shows only a green area, the LAI reveals streams and differences in vegetation density. 🌳 💡The benefits to agriculture are many: LAI helps manage irrigation and fertiliser applications, monitor pests and diseases, and even predict yields. 2025, here we come! 🛰️ We can see more: rainfall 💧 Precipitation data from weather stations is good, but rare: the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, for example, has only three weather stations (Figure 1), despite being crucial for the country's agricultural production. ❓How can rainfall be monitored in the region? Weather-model derived rainfall data provide: 🌍 global coverage 📅 daily data 🌐 a high spatial resolution of about 10 kilometres 📈 a time series covering all years since 1950 Figure 2 shows the rainfall in Rio Grande do Sul on December 7. Only one of the three weather stations recorded rainfall that day, while weather-model data show that the entire northern part of the state was affected. 💡Your benefit? We compare the precipitation data with local agricultural production in the past. In this way, we can predict soil moisture or yield based on the current rainfall months ahead. We also calculate the deviation of current rainfall from the long-term average to give you an assessment of the current situation (Figure 3). The data in our #croptify app is updated daily.
