  • Last week our first Quarterly of 2025 took place. We met at our office in Heidelberg to share important updates and exchange ideas on various technical topics. We also kicked-off our “Grow and Learn” series, where one team member gives a talk about a topic that deeply interests them or is currently keeping them busy. 💡🤓 Julius Blumenröder started the series and shared insights, how he builds data structures to enable data monitoring. This is an essential foundation for our GreenTec Performance System (GPS), which monitors data in dialysis centers and supports more efficient operations. 📊 Data structures don't just fall from the sky—they have to be carefully designed. The topic may sound dry to non-experts, but Julius managed to spark our imagination. Still, we are all very happy that HE is taking care of it! 😅 Kevin Schnitzerling and Marcel Schanze continued the series with project insights. Smart repair can be the more sustainable alternative to building stuff from scratch. And, as always at our Quarterlies, we had plenty of great interactions and a lot of fun. 💚

  • In our previous post, we highlighted how digitalization enhances dialysis care. Today, let’s focus on the healthcare staff who make it all happen. 💚 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. In addition to patient care, they also manage, for example, documentation and administrative tasks, monitor dialysis machines, take care of orders, and organize patient transport. Many of these tasks, while necessary, are time-consuming and often prone to error, when done manually. This takes time away from what really matters: patient interaction and quality care. This can make work stressful, especially when combined with a shortage of staff. Of course, this is not only true for dialysis. According to the Future Health Index 2024, two-thirds of healthcare leaders worldwide report a rise in stress and burnout among their staff. 𝗦𝗼, 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘀? By automating repetitive, time-consuming tasks like data entry and resource tracking, digital tools free up time for staff to focus on patient care. These tools can also reduce errors and improve operational efficiency, allowing healthcare professionals to work more proactively and with less stress. Our GreenTec Performance System (GPS), for example, is able to do daily reportings according to ISO23500 regulations. Carefully done, this task alone takes around 15 minutes daily. Digital solutions that relieve administrative burdens are key for a dialysis industry that is fit for future. #SmartDialysis #StaffWellbeing #Digitalisation #WorkforceSupport Source: Future Health Index 2024 Better care for more people Commissioned by Philips

Do regenerative energy systems make sense for dialysis centers? Short answer: Yes, absolutely. They help providers and owners reduce costs and improve sustainability. 1️⃣ Solar power: Photovoltaic arrays on dialysis center roofs capture sunlight and convert it into electricity. This clean energy source can significantly offset the high power demands of dialysis treatments, for example, created by RO and dialysis machines. 2️⃣ Heat pumps: These systems efficiently convert electricity into thermal energy, reducing the energy needed to heat buildings. We also use them to pre-heat water for dialysis treatments. 3️⃣ HE.RO (HEat up Reverse Osmosis): Our product uses, for example, the energy of heat pumps and solar panels to heat water before reverse osmosis. 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: 💵 Cost savings: A typical dialysis center can save a significant amount of money in electricity costs by implementing these systems. 🌍 Environmental impact: Reduced reliance on fossil fuels significantly lowers carbon emissions. 💪 Energy independence: Regenerative energy makes your center more resilient and less dependent from the electricity market. 🤝 Synergistic benefits: Combining energy systems creates a "booster" effect, increasing self-consumption of generated energy. We’ll talk about the benefits of what we call ’Cross Sector Integration‘ in one of our next posts. If you’re wondering whether your center is suitable for such installations: get in touch with us. By adopting regenerative energy solutions, dialysis centers can not only reduce costs and build resilience but also contribute to more sustainable healthcare operations. #SmartDialysis #GreenDialysis #RegenerativeEnergy

  • How much energy does a dialysis treatment need? Recent studies have shed light on the resource consumption of hemodialysis treatments in Australia and Spain. While the numbers vary, the conclusions are similar to those we see for the German market. The Australian study (1), compared two dialysis centers: one with a power consumption of 10.3 kWh/HD (Hemodialysis) and the other at 5.3 kWh/HD, highlighting significant differences in power usage (measured for RO and HD appliances only). While the comparison wasn't perfect due to differing equipment and processes, the key takeaway is clear: 👉 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿. Once you have this data, optimization opportunities can be identified. In the Spanish study (2), the total energy consumption of a dialysis center was found to average 25.03 kWh/HD, with increased usage during the summer months, most likely due to air conditioning. 👉 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀—𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲—𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗢𝟮 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁, 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹. With this data, centers can then determine tailored management strategies. Based on our own experience in Germany, the average total electricity consumption of a dialysis center is around 10 kWh/HD. Reverse osmosis and dialysis machines account for the largest share of a dialysis center's electricity consumption. At GreenTec Dialysis GmbH we believe in the power of data-driven decisions. 📊 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽—𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘂𝘀. Since we know that most center owners and staff aren't excited about manually tracking consumption in technical rooms, we’ve developed a digital solution. Our GPS system (GreenTec Performance System) helps centers gain control of their energy and water usage. While there’s no simple answer to the question, "How much energy does dialysis treatment need?" the answer is easier: 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆. This makes optimization not just an opportunity, but an ecologic and economic necessity. What’s your approach to managing resource consumption in dialysis centers? Are you already tracking your energy and water usage? Let’s discuss how we can work together to make dialysis treatments more sustainable for the future. #SmartDialyis #GreenDialysis #EnergyEfficiency Sources: 1: Barraclough et al., 2024: Updating the Data: The Resource Consumption of Modern-Day Hemodialysis Systems 2: Arias-Guillén et al., 2024: Environmental challenges in hemodialysis: Exploring the road to sustainability
