📖 🦄 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒅𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒔 𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒑 𝒔𝒖𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔? 𝑯𝒚𝒅𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒘𝒊𝒔𝒆! 🗝️ My colleagues and I analysed the career paths of founders of successful hydrogen companies (>=$20M fundraising) to identify patterns in the data. Here are the key findings on education: ⚙️ 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝟓𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠. Only 23% in science, 15% in business. For unicorns, where software and programming skills are much more relevant, the share of science majors is 10% higher – but the share of engineers 30% lower. 🎓 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐮𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 : 40% of the founders have a bachelor's degree from an elite university and 50% have a master's degree. Outside the H2 space, this share is much lower for unicorns in all sectors for both degrees. There are three explanations for this: first, these institutions give access to excellent research & IP. Second, they signal quality. Finally, their graduates are endowed with a strong network, increasing the likelihood of successful fundraising. 🥼𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 & 𝐈𝐏 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲: Nearly one in two Rising Stars in Hydrogen founders has a PhD. This is twice as much as other studies show for unicorns. In contrast, only 1 in 158 founders does not have a degree – while 17% of unicorn founders outside H2 do not have any university degree. This underlines the importance of education, applied research experience, as well as individual ownership and familiarity with the firm's proprietary IP. Excited to see more insights? 😲🌟𝙁𝙚𝙬 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙠𝙮: 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟒% 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝟐 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧! 🌟People and teams are key to the success or failure of a start-up. However, our experience told us, that Hydrogen is different than other sectors. Endeavor's excellent analysis inspired us to do something similar for hydrogen: an analysis of individual career paths before founding a Rising Star company (>=$20M fundraising). That’s why we’re excited to share insights from our latest study: 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘏𝘺𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘯: 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘗𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩-𝘗𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘏2 𝘍𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫? 🔍 💡 Over 𝟓𝟎% of H2 founders have an engineering degree, and nearly 𝟏 𝐢𝐧 𝟐 holds a PhD. ⏳ On average, founders bring 𝟏𝟒+ 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 of professional experience from industries like energy, chemicals and automotive. 🔥 𝟒𝟑% have 1st or 2nd degree entrepreneurial experience, building on lessons learned from previous ventures. 🌱 Yet, there’s still work to be done: only 𝟕 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝟓𝟖 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐳𝐞𝐝 are women, indicating the need to enable more female entrepreneurship in hydrogen. In a field as complex as hydrogen, it’s clear that 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬: it requires deep hydrogen knowledge, resilience, industry experience and a robust network that thrives on innovation. As our CEO Uwe Kerkmann puts it: “Building a hydrogen startup is no small feat. It’s about combining technical excellence with market insight, navigating complex regulations and industry structures and maintaining a relentless focus on impact.
