Info
We are a research-driven hub for applied AI that aims to enable the efficient and agile development and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) assets across the whole Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest research organisation. Helmholtz AI (which is short for Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence Cooperation unit) is structured as a hub-and-spoke model with six units across the Helmholtz Association. Our headquarter is hosted by the Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU) and we have local units at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG), Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Representing the six research fields of the Helmholtz Association, our units host Research Groups and consultant teams. They are at the heart of our activities and ensure wide dissemination of methods as well as broad uptake of data-based research questions in applied AI. Launched in March 2019 and led by Professor Fabian Theis (Helmholtz Zentrum München), our ambition is to tackle the major challenges and pressing issues facing society and develop sustainable solutions for tomorrow and beyond with newly developed AI/ML-based tools, offering democratized access to them in an open and dynamic community.

👏 Check out the amazing work from the Helmholtz Imaging researchers attending NeurIPS 2024! Fantastic to see so many talented people from the Helmholtz Information and Data Science Platforms showcasing their latest insights this week:
🪷 Very excited to present Arctique: a breakthrough in uncertainty quantification for medical image segmentation Uncertainty quantification is the unsung hero for developing reliable segmentation algorithms in safety-critical applications. Yet, our field has been trapped between oversimplified synthetic datasets and complex real-world images that obscure the true understanding of a given method 🦸🏻 Breaking the barrier: Arctique is a game-changing, procedurally generated dataset designed to bridge this critical gap. It provides a rich, challenging landscape for advanced segmentation tasks, enabling precise delineation of cellular structures and perfect ground-truth annotations Key highlights: 🧫 Up to 50k images with exact 2D/3D masks, cellular metadata, and scene re-generation variables 🕹️ Intuitive sliders for full control over image and label parameters 🦎 Proven zero-shot performance on real H&E images 🛠️ Easy-to-use Blender-Python framework for scene creation and image post-processing Why it matters? Arctique isn't just a dataset — it's a versatile research tool that: helps address uncertainty, enhances interpretability, improves active learning strategies, and enables targeted robustness studies 🤝🏻 Come visit our poster at NeurIPS on Wed 11 Dec from 11am to 2pm PST (West Ballroom A-D #5202): take this unique opportunity to chat with us and learn more about our innovative approach And don’t forget to check out the paper https://lnkd.in/d437DEXW and the code https://lnkd.in/dpHhy-mq ! A final heartfelt thanks to my exceptional colleagues Jannik Franzen, Claudia Winklmayr, and Christoph Karg for their hard work and brilliant insights, and to our supervisor Dagmar Kainmueller for her unwavering guidance #SyntheticData #MedicalImaging #UncertaintyQuantification #AI #NeurIPS2024
