"Humans are wired to avoid the uncomfortable, unpleasant, and inconvenient. Our evolutionary biases make it difficult to think about – let alone engage with – sustainable lifestyles if we feel it threatens our creature comforts and social norms. As a result, the philanthropy sector (and, probably, all of us) find it difficult to speak frankly about the global inequities in resource consumption and to move towards equitable action." New blog from Lauren Uba and the Funders for Sustainable Living about the importance of positive framing when communicating about overconsumption, inspired by a presentation from George Marshall. Our very own Lewis Akenji speaks with The Club of Rome and gets real about what overconsumption means and what we should focus on looking forward: "I think what the science is becoming very clear about is that at the current rates of consumption, we as a species would not make it. There's a tiny few at the top of the food chain that are overconsuming and causing lots of problems including climate change and biodiversity loss. While there is a majority that is relegated as an afterthought by the economic system. How do we organise ourselves in a way that we meet our everyday needs, in a way that we all live well with each other and equitably? In other words, how do we build a sustainable civilisation?" #wellbeing #equality #climate
Lewis Akenji shares his alignment with the mission of The Club of Rome - to apply holistic, interdisciplinary and long-term thinking to ensure broader societal and planetary wellbeing. While some us take this end of year period as a time of rest and a break for our usual jobs, for many unpaid work only increases this time of year. Between increased caring responsibilities, presents to purchase, meals to prepare and the mental load of creating Christmas 'magic', this can be a very stressful time of year - particularly for women who bear the brunt of this work. Hot or Cool's work on Caring Societies addresses some of this, and our background paper from 2023 presents care as a solution to the collective crises in our society. Did you miss this? Hot or Cool Executive Director Lewis Akenji shared his thoughts on the Happy Planet Index, and how to achieve good lives for all - within ecological limits. Read it now 👇
📰 Another of our most-read articles from the blog this year was Lewis Akenji's insight into the 2024 Happy Planet Index and what it tells us about a good life. The latest data shows that in most countries, the top 10% of earners, despite being responsible for around a third of emissions, are the least efficient at converting carbon into health and wellbeing gains.
