Last night, Purpose, Martin Oetting’s brilliant film about the push for a wellbeing economy – starring Katherine Trebeck and Lorenzo Fioramonti - had its premiere in Berlin. Hot or Cool’s Saamah Abdallah was pleased to be speaking at the evening. In parallel with this, Hot or Cool is proud to be working with five organisations (Greenpeace International, Earth4All/The Club of Rome, Economy for the Common Good/Gemeinwohl-Ökonomie Deutschland, Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie) to launch a statement calling for Germany to define a set of headline indicators to measure progress, and proposing a set of three policies which seek to enact a wellbeing economy. 'The kind of inequality that the ultra-billionaires are creating is bad news for all but the most absurdly wealthy. Because even a millionaire will be small fry in a world where the most powerful men in the world have assets of over $100bn, make regular calls to world leaders, and control technology that is fast making humans redundant...' 'The elite beholden to the current status quo need to wake up and realise that they can’t hold back the rising tide of populism, nationalism and climate change nihilism without turning towards the people.' In this week's opinion piece, Hot or Cool's Saamah Abdallah asks how to maintain hope in an increasingly challenging and desperate political climate. Read it now: https://lnkd.in/e39GY7qs

As part of World Urban Forum 12 Egypt, last week, Hot or Cool Programmes Director Aimée Aguilar Jaber was pleased to be part of the World Green Building Council and the OECD Development Centre on Pathways to Net Zero: System innovations for emerging urban centres and zero carbon readiness in Middle East and Africa. The take aways included: - Urban lifestyles are frequently unsustainable. Individuals are not to blame, but rather systems. - Bolder policy solutions are needed to undertake the reorganisation of cities and streets to be oriented to people and the planet. - Indicators such as the #HappyPlanetIndex could guide transformation with the narrative of 'good lives don't have to cost the earth'. Following the forum, Aimée was interviewed by Comunica La Ciudad and broadcasted by Milenio Television in Mexico. Watch the video below! #WUF12

Are our clothing purchases lining the pockets of fossil fuel companies? 'Synthetic fibres (such as polyester, nylon, acrylic and elastane) use fossil fuels—both crude oil and coal—as raw material inputs. The production of synthetics has increased dramatically over the last 50 years. Between 1975 and 2019 the synthetic market grew ninefold and in 2021 synthetics made up 64% of global textile fibre production. Yet because the synthetics sector consumes fossil fuels as feedstock and does not combust them directly, it has become a key ‘blind spot’ within climate change discussions.' '(We must) refocus on the key issue, keeping fossil fuels in the ground and preventing the environmental and social harm caused by their extraction and use. By narrowly focusing on the energy transition, we are opening loopholes for fossil fuel companies to divert oil and gas into new growth sectors like textiles and clothing.' Thoughts from Hot or Cool's Hedda Roberts in advance of COP29 Azerbaijan, beginning next week. Read it now: https://lnkd.in/eh4ac5QK

Building off our previous report, 'Towards a 21st Century Social Contract', Hot or Cool and IDDRI are proud to announce our new paper, 'Inside the Minds of Citizens: Interpretations of today’s social contract in France and the UK'. In this report, we present new qualitative research, conducted to better understand how the concept of the social contract resonates with citizens. Through focus groups and one-on-one interviews, we address the following questions: Is the contractual logic familiar? How are the four pacts perceived? What matters most? And what types of narratives have the interviewees assimilated throughout their lives? Read the findings now: https://lnkd.in/eQxNDqfX
