In series production, guessing quality is not an option. To ensure coating quality, identifying process-specific sensitive parameters and defining optimal process windows are key to eliminating guesswork from quality control. So, the big question is: At what point does a variation in specific parameters lead to coating defects, and how significant must the deviation be to trigger a non-OK result? The image below highlights insights from a sensitivity analysis conducted at HPL, where we used the WECOGUARD system to closely track and trace process impacts. While intentionally varying the working distance, WECOGUARD monitored noticeable deviations in real time. Metallographic analysis subsequently confirmed these findings, revealing clear quality issues in the affected layers and validating the correlation between parameter adjustments and coating performance. This precise feedback loop transforms trial and error into actionable insights to efficiently define optimal process windows for reliable coating results. Want to take control of your coating quality? Simon Storms, Dominik Dobrzanski, and Johannes Schütz are ready to assist. #StopGuessing #StartKnowing #QualityControl #EndOfDust #LaserCoating

It's no secret: Powder is critical for the coating process – its quality directly influences the final outcome. But achieving that ideal finish depends on much more than just the choice of powder material itself; factors like morphology, particle size distribution, storage conditions, and other variables all play their part. Key word: Sensitivity Analysis. So, when exactly do specific powder properties start to impact the coating result? And what changes can lead to off-spec results? Last week, our experts Dominik Dobrzanski and Johannes Schütz shared insights with the SHW Brake Systems GmbH and Pankl Racing Systems' team, helping them deepen their understanding of how powder properties impact coating quality. "Many thanks to HPL Technologies for the excellent preparation and execution of the workshop. Over the course of the two days, we gained a wealth of valuable insights, especially regarding the properties of powder materials and their impact on coating processes. These insights will help us consistently ensure the quality of our products", says Walter Baumegger, R&D Engineer Materials Development at Pankl Racing Systems. The workshop equipped them with practical knowledge to optimize their processes and ensure a more consistent, high-quality output in their coating applications. We look forward to part 2 of the workshop, where the team will visit us to conduct a hands-on powder analysis using our specialized equipment. Special thanks to you, Mr. Baumegger, for your organizational support! Providing on-site support is part of HPL's mission to work side by side with stakeholders involved in advancing brake disc coating. By collaborating closely with industry teams at the heart of the action, we aim to be a reliable resource as they navigate new challenges and drive their applications forward. 📌If coating process improvements are on your team’s radar, tag a colleague who’d appreciate the connection! #brakedisc #automotive #workshop #sharingiscaring #lasercoating #qualityassurance #endofdust

“If only we could just peel back the layers...” Imagine checking #coatingquality by simply peeling it back, or – brace yourself – cutting an entire production line in half for a metallographic analysis. Spoiler alert: neither option is feasible. But what if we told you that you don’t have to? 👀 Instead of slicing and dicing, WECOGUARD analyzes process data to detect coating defects before they become costly mysteries. The almost 3.5 billion sensor values already collected in high-speed laser coating processes reveal the hidden story of your coatings! Deviating coating quality is a direct result of deviating process parameters – being monitored and stored by WECOGUARD, peeling back the mystery and enabling targeted troubleshooting as in the example below: a defective powder hose. Stop guessing. Start knowing. 🤙 Ready to see the difference? Reach out to Simon Storms and unconver what's beneath the surface!

🔦 HPL Insights: Adjusting Melting Ratio and Distribution of Carbides through Targeted Process Control for Application-Specific Surface Performance Comparative WLTP studies have revealed that the size and distribution of carbides in brake disc coatings have a significant impact on fine dust emissions. Concurrently , carbides play a critical role in optimizing coating cost, performance, and durability. For this reason, our team investigated how varying intensities and intensity profiles can be leveraged to adjust the distribution and melting ratio of agglomerated titanium carbides through targeted process control. Discover our findings below! ⬇️ Want to find out how this can benefit your applications?
