The Consul General of the Republic of India (Consulate General of India, Hamburg 🇮🇳🇩🇪) Soumya Gupta visited our offices at VDR today. She discussed with the CEO of the VDR Dr. Martin Kröger and the managing director of Reederei Roth Thorsten Meier, among other things, the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships in #India. Especially the used steel from the ships is a valued raw material. Over 90% of the material of old ships is recycled: lamps, anchors and other components from the ships find new uses, as does all of the high-quality ship steel. India is one of the world's most important recycling locations. Environmental protection and working conditions have improved significantly over the years. Many initiatives by the #shipping industry in India have led to a significant increase in environmental protection and working conditions in Indian shipyards, which now largely meet international standards. Many more shipyards across South Asia should follow this example. This also requires support from Europe and the EU Commission 🇪🇺.
