💡 A fascinating and thought-provoking evening yesterday at Institut für Innovation und Technik (iit) with Matthias Sander, NZZ journalist and author, who presented his book on China on its way towards a digital superpower. The discussion offered incredible insights into the complex dynamics shaping China’s role in the global tech race. We’re interested in your thoughts: How can democratic states maintain their edge in this rapidly evolving tech landscape? Here are my key takeaways 🔹 Digitalisation at scale: China leads in everyday digitalisation—often a double-edged sword, as it powers efficiency and surveillance alike. But being advanced here doesn’t automatically make China the frontrunner in all future technologies.   🔹 Strength in application, not always in innovation: China excels in leapfrogging (think e-mobility) and scaling applications, but its basic research often lags behind.   🔹 Data ≠ dominance: While China has vast data reserves to train AI, much of it includes propaganda and misinformation. This puts its AI tools, like LLMs, behind global leaders like ChatGPT.   🔹 Subsidies vs. regulations: The EU-China competition is as much about tech as it is about subsidies and regulatory models. The true extent of China’s subsidies is unclear, but its local champions often gain advantage through non-competitive means.   🔹 Autonomy at all costs: China is working to free itself from technological dependencies—just as the US and EU are doing.   ❗️❕❗️ One key conclusion stood out: Research and innovation thrive on freedom and talent. As we look toward 2049, the 100th anniversary of the People’s Republic, one question looms large:   ❓❔❓  Can China truly become the global leader in key future technologies?   The consensus from our discussion: It’s unlikely—but only if democratic nations stay proactive in driving research and innovation forward. 🌏 iit focussing international #GeoTechPolitics 🌏 Technology transcends borders – in more ways than one. It connects the world through the internet, accelerating global business, politics, and societal developments. At the same time, it physically moves across borders, with flows often originating from Southeast Asia and shaping economies across continents. But technology doesn't just connect – it creates interdependencies between innovators, manufacturers and consumers. These can drive collaboration but also pose risks of exploitation. The global stage is constantly shifting as superpowers compete to assert technological supremacy, sustainability, and autonomy. In accordance with the strategic importance of technology in shaping international relations, the Institut für Innovation und Technik (iit) just launched a working group on #GeoTechPolitics – featuring our colleagues Simone Ehrenberg-Silies, Oliver Ziegler, Dr. Stefan Wolf and Liona Faulstich, with more to follow. Congratulations! This new initiative is dedicated to exploring the ways technology influences diplomacy, trade, and global power dynamics. 𝗭𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗘𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗯𝗻𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲: #Sachsen profitiert stark von dem dynamischen Investitionsgeschehen in der sächsischen #Mikroelektronikbranche.
