The original yard model of Bibby WaveMaster Horizon was donated to our collection a while ago. At some earlier point, the model had suffered some transport damage. Our colleague Frédéric Lebas has taken the best care of it during a restoration work that was completed last week. As you can see in the pictures, the model is now good as new. This ship is considered both a ASV (Accommodation Support Vessel) and a Service Operation Vessel (SOV), built for the maintenance and operation of #offshore #windfarms . She is the second ship of the Bibby-WaveMaster-class. The class was developed by the Dutch Damen shipyards Group and built at the Damen Shipyards Galati, Romania, in 2019. The ship is owned by the British shipping company Bibby Offshore Marine Services and chartered to SIEMENS GAMESA RENEWABLE ENERGY AB and EnBW to operate at the EnBW and Endbridge offshore wind farms Albatros and Hohe See. The technician taking care of this locations work continuously at 100 km distance to shore for two weeks service shifts. The ship is their workplace and habitation during these periods. The up to 40 technicians are usually transported from and to the ship via helicopter, were they join a crew of 20 seafarers. The ship offers comfortable habitations and a lot of stability thanks to her DP-2 System (computer operated Dynamic Positioning). This allows the ship to safely transfer the technicians to offshore structures even with waves of up to 3 m. For that, the ship uses a gangway with which the technician can walk-to-work up to a height of 26 m above sea level. The model is currently in storage but will be displayed in our section on offshore energy on deck 7 of the museum. #maritime #museum #hamburg

Salvage Tug "Thor", 1942 The salvage tug "Thor" was completed in Sweden in 1942 on behalf of the Bugsier shipping company and assigned to the naval arsenal in Kiel after being handed over to the Kriegsmarine. On 22.11.1943 it was hit by a British air mine and sank with three casualties. Later salvaged and repaired in Kiel, "Thor" became war reparations and was chartered to Bugsier with home port Kiel from 1946, then purchased in 1952 and stationed in Hamburg. In 1969, the tug was scrapped by Eisen & Metall AG, Hamburg. Scale 1/100 Builders Aktiebolaget Lodose Varf, Sweden Owner Bugsier-, Reederei- und Bergungs-Gesellschaft mbH & Co. This little coastal freighter had a rather eventful existence for a ship of her kind, and quite an sad ending. She had an overall length of 66,5 m, a beam of 10,3 m and a capacity of just 744 GRT. On July 5, 1957 the Kajen was delivered by the D.W. Kremer Sohn shipyard in Elmshorn, Germany, to the shipping company H.M. Gehrken. They sold her in June 1963 to Smith's Coasters from Durban, South Africa, that renamed the ship Indoda. On November the 30th 1976, she sank in the shallow waters of Durban Bay after a collision with the ship Presidente Oribe from Uruguay. The Indodda was later salvaged, repaired and could continue her duty. In 1979 she became the property of Castle Shipping Lines Inc from Georgetown and in 1981 she was transferred to Castle Lines Marine Co. from Piraeus. The new name of the ship under this owners was Castle Spirit. In 1983 the Narden Cia. Naviera SA from San Lorenzo, Honduras, bought the ship and renamed her Narden. In 1984 she was abandoned by her crew after hull damage had made her no longer seaworthy. This caused the ship to be arrested. The data we are using does not give us more detail about the circumstances surrounding her abandonment and arrest - as usual, we are thankful if anyone among you has more information. The next we know is that she ended up scrapped in Naples in 1990. Her original yard model in a scale of 1:100 was built by the Christel Stührmann workshop and is part of our exhibition on the history of modern maritime logistics on deck 6 of the museum. #maritime #museum #hamburg

The battle at Hampton Roads The American Civil War represented a radical change in #naval #history. In our display on the Battle at Hampton Roads on deck 5 of the museum the main subject are the radical innovations in naval building that came into use during the conflict for the first time. The battle between the Union Ship "Monitor" and the Confederate "Virginia" on 9 March 1862 was the first time in history that two armoured warships came into conflict. In the course of the battle, which lasted several hours and sometimes at very close range, neither ship was able to land any decisive hits. The "Monitor" was often so close to the enemy that the latter's guns hardly came into play. At the same time, the Union ship was very manoeuvrable due to its shallow draught and evaded several ramming attempts by the "Virginia". - "Monitor" Armoured ship, U.S. Navy, USA, scale 1:96 Designed in 1861 by the Swede John Erikson, the "Monitor" with its low superstructure was designed for operations in shallow waters and was intended to be as small a target as possible. Length/width/draft 52.4 x 12.5 x 3.4 m Size 987 t Speed 8 kn Shipyard Continental Iron Works, Brooklyn, N.Y. U.S. Navy, USA, 1862, scale 1:32 The bottle-neck-shaped cast-iron muzzle-loading guns were named after their designer, Rear Admiral John Dahlgren (1809-1870). Their special shape was intended to distribute the force of the expanding propellant gases during firing and thus protect the barrel from bursting. Dahlgren guns could be mounted on a pivot or in revolving turrets. This new type of mounting was used on most of the monitors of the United States Navy, for example on the type ship "Monitor" and the following constructions: "Neosho", "Marietta", "Casco" and "Milwaukee”. Modeller: Olaf Krabbenhöft, Hamburg - „Virginia" ex „Merrimac" Ironclad Confederate Navy, Scale 1/150 The "Virginia" was the world's first fully armored warship - a so-called "ironclad". It was powered by steam engines and a propeller. Length/Beam/Draft 84 x 11,8 x 6,7 metres Deplacement 3.211 tons Speed 9 kn Builders Charleston Navy Yard, Mass. Today we had the honor to welcome Captain Thomas Lindegaard Madsen in our exhibitions. We are glad he enjoyed the experience! #maritime #museum #hamburg #maersk
Exciting to visit the Internationales Maritimes Museum Hamburg in Hamburg, the biggest private maritime museum in the World with a huge collection of ship models and other maritime effects, including a model of a Maersk TripleE! Especially nice to meet Mr. Klaus in the ship model workshop and hear him tell about his work restoring and maintaining all the ship models and sharing his huge insight into ship construction through all times. If you visit Hamburg, the @maritimesmuseum is definitely a MUST see!
