Lack of financial knowledge remains an issue 🚨 👉 Our recent survey shed light on financial literacy in Germany. ▶️ Only 57 % of women and 71 % of men rate their financial knowledge as good, with just 25 % understanding the term inflation very well. ▶️ Every fifth respondent doesn’t have any understanding about recession. 10 % do neither understand inflation nor interest rates. ▶️ For each financial term in the survey, women were 10–15% less likely than men to say they understood the term very well. Our CCO, Katharina Lueth, points out: "Financial literacy is not a universal remedy for financial worries. However, understanding financial and economic mechanisms can help people anticipate the consequences of certain decisions and equip them to manage challenges. Promoting financial literacy is a societal task–that needs a concerted effort from the public and the private sector alike." 🏫 🏢

Ponte las pilas! 🔋 You might not know this phrase, but at least for one Raisineer, it is part of their identity. Our strength lies in the different stories and unique perspectives of each and every one. 🌍 That is why we want to give you a glimpse of who we are – with our #Younique interviews. Meet Helen, she is the People & Culture Leader at Raisin US, a true New Yorker, a Salvadoran and an American. We talked to her about her favourite place, New York, and phrases that help her navigate life. 🍎 ____ What is your favourite place on earth? That‘s a hard one because I‘ve been lucky enough to travel a lot. One of the places where I’ve always felt a connection is Dublin, Ireland. The people are great, the food as well. The craic is great, as they say. All of Ireland has good vibes. One day, I would love to just get a little house in Ireland in the middle of the country and just live out my twilight years. 🇮🇪 As you mentioned that you traveled a lot, did you also ever leave New York to live somewhere else? ✈️ Not really. I‘ve never lived in other countries for too long; a true blue New Yorker. It‘s not for a lack of wanting to leave, but it is very hard to leave when you have everything in reach. Just take food as an example, there’s literally everything, Latin, Eastern European, Asian –  there are restaurants that specialize in food from countries that I‘ve never even heard of. And then you have Manhattan which is people trying the new viral drink or croissant muffin hybrid thing. New York is really the gamut of all things. Can you share a proverb that resonates with you? 💬 I’d have to give you a Salvadorian and an American one. Not so much a proverb but more of a phrase which is said in Latin American communities–“ponte las pilas”. What it actually translates to is “put in your batteries” but it means step up and do it. And so, at times, I would speak to my mother and she would just say “ponte las pilas”–get up and keep going on those difficult days The American phrase would be “fuhgeddaboudit”. Sometimes things can get emotional and you have to keep your calm. Just forget about it, sleep or rest on it, then come back and pick it up. There you go - “fuhgeddaboudit”. Fun fact, if you drive in New York and leave a borough, there‘s always a sign with a different saying and one of them says “Leaving Brooklyn, Fuhgeddaboudit”. Thank you so much, Helen! _ Stay tuned to get to know more Raisineers.

New year—new monetary policy? 🚨 👉 Not quite, markets still expect more rate cuts from the European Central Bank, Bank of England and Federal Reserve. Our Bank Analytics team has taken a closer look at market expectations and interest rates.  💡 ▶️ In the UK and US, the rate-cutting cycle is expected to be much shallower. The Fed is likely to cut rates only once or twice in 2025, reflecting healthy economic growth and lingering inflationary concerns, with rates ending the year around 4 %. Similarly, in the UK, just two cuts are priced in, given persistent inflation and uncertainty over the impact of tax increases on business and employment. ⚖️ ▶️ Eurozone inflation has rebounded again as expected, with December consumer prices 2.4 % higher than the previous year. While this is unlikely to deter the ECB from cutting rates again at the end of this month—given the faltering economy and looming trade tensions—the rising inflation has pushed rate expectations for 2025 slightly higher again. 🏫 ▶️ Markets now expect four additional rate cuts, with the deposit facility rate (DFR) projected to settle around 2 %, an upward revision from the 1.75 % forecast just a few weeks ago. ▶️ For retail deposit rates this means: top rates continued to fall in December, although the pace of the drop slowed towards the end of the year as bank activity relaxed during the holiday season.

Now that the new year has started, it’s worth reflecting on the past year and also taking a look at what’s relevant for the future. 🔭 Our General Counsel, Dr Marc Roberts, who also serves as Co-President of the European FinTech Association, has contributed the foreword to the latest edition of the International Fintech Review by Beaumont Capital Markets. 📖 In his piece, he explores the state of EU Fintech. Read the excerpt on the Political and Regulatory Environment below which is the first episode of our new LinkedIn series: Raisin Insights. 🎉 The European Union has long recognized the potential of FinTech to revolutionize financial services, and over the past decade, EU policymakers have sought to create a regulatory framework that fosters innovation while ensuring consumer protection and financial stability. Key legislation, such as the Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the upcoming Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), exemplify the EU’s approach to creating a cohesive FinTech ecosystem. While PSD2 opened doors for data access, GDPR set strict guidelines on how this data can be used and stored. FinTechs are particularly affected, as they often rely on sensitive consumer data for their business models. Compliance costs are high, and non-compliance can lead to significant fines. Nevertheless, GDPR has contributed to building trust in digital finance, especially when compared to less-regulated markets outside Europe. The Digital Operational Resilience Act, which aims to harmonise IT risk requirements across EU financial entities, is expected to come into force by 2025. For FinTechs, the mandate underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures. While compliance with DORA will require additional investment, it could benefit FinTechs in the long run by making them more resilient against cyber threats, which is increasingly crucial as more transactions move online.
