Recycling rotor blades - a sustainable recovery of organic and nonorganic components in GFRP
Info
Joulmine is a start-up company founded in 2022, that has set itself the task of developing a technically innovative recycling concept for the GFRP derived from wind blades. With a capacity of up to 44.000t, we aim to produce up to 3000t of hydrogen annually. We also recover glass and regenerate carbon that can be reused as a substitute for fossil raw materials in production processes. The name Joulmine is inspired by two ideas. The idea to regenerate energy, that is what the word Joule stands for. And the mission to tackle the biggest recycling problem of the wind energy industry, by mining the discarded blades for raw material.

Interesting article by Aleksandar Simic on the limitations of LCOE—cost alone isn’t enough to capture the true value of energy projects. At Joulmine, we support this shift toward holistic evaluation. Our rotor blade recycling addresses end-of-life challenges in renewable energy. True sustainability means factoring in environmental and system costs, not just generation price. It’s time for the energy industry to take responsibility. #RethinkEnergy #CircularEconomy https://lnkd.in/ebXnGE9p

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁: Although a bit late, we believe it’s better to share our insights than never! Two weeks ago, at the European Wind Blade Recycling Summit in Copenhagen, we witnessed the industry coming together like never before. Here are some key takeaways: 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁: Finally, the industry is collaborating to address critical challenges. 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Our process uniquely includes hydrogen as a valuable regenerative recycling product, contributing to a comprehensive solution. 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: It was clear that the industry needs to focus on fully circular solutions that don't push the problem into the future to be solved by the next generation. We are delighted to see that fellow project developers are aiming into the same direction as we do. 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: It was agreed that the rotor blade recycling is still facing fundamental challenges. More collaboration is essential for better solutions. Material passports and waste codes are good starts, but we need more. Unified scopes are necessary to better organize information and achieve real CO2 neutrality and transparency. We were thrilled to see all key players in the wind industry come together, ready to write the next chapter and make pivotal decisions. Excited for what’s next! #WindBladeRecycling #Innovation #Hydrogen #Collaboration #FutureSolutions #CircularEconomy #RethinkingRotorbladeRecycling
