Circular economy for electromobility – ZirkulEA project 🚀 In the ZirkulEA research project, funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung and the Projektträger Karlsruhe (PTKA) am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), we are working on an economical, circular value chain for electromobility. Our goal: a comprehensive, cross-company exchange of information to efficiently recycle and reuse raw materials – a decisive step towards a sustainable future! ♻️ This week we presented the project partners - CUTEC Institut, flexis AG part of Blue Yonder, Ford Deutschland, GreenIng GmbH & Co. KG, OPTIMUM datamanagement solutions GmbH, Vogtmann-Herold + Co. GmbH, ZF Group, Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, KSRI @KIT, wbk Institut für Produktionstechnik, KIT - our innovative prototype of an unscrewing process module, which was specially developed for the disassembly of high-voltage batteries. 🔋 Special features of the unscrewing module prototype: 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲: The DEPRAG Tool Changer adapts to different fasteners. 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁: Fasteners are removed directly via a hose, which speeds up the process. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲: Designed for up to 1000 V, with electrical insulation and innovative ceramic. 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁: Process monitoring through documentation of screwdriving curves (torque, angle of rotation, position of the E-axis, and vacuum value) for precise status information. In addition, five participating SMEs developed and tested solution components as pilot projects, which serve as reference examples for the bi.smart approach. 💡 As a central project outcome, we’re excited to introduce the bi.smart Launchpad (www.bismart.info), a comprehensive knowledge portal for decision-makers and engineers that provides targeted tools and valuable information to help companies build essential digital skills. 🌟 Reflecting on an Inspiring Experience at ECIS 2024! 🌟 We are excited to share that we had the opportunity to present our latest work in the BMBF-funded research project ZirkulEA at the workshop ‘Technology as an Enabler for Circular Economy (Tech4CE)’ at this year’s European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS 2024), which took place in June 2024 in Paphos, Cyprus. As always, ECIS proved to be a remarkable gathering of thought leaders, researchers, and practitioners from across the globe. It was an enriching experience to engage with the latest research, innovative ideas, and dynamic discussions around Circular Economy During the workshop, we presented on our latest project results ‘Towards designing a digital industrial platform for the circular economy’ where we delved into an ecosystem process model to delineate material and information flows among stakeholders and the development of 46 requirements for the digital industrial platform, aggregated into six higher-level requirement categories: Governance, Actor Engagement, Development & Implementation, Dismantling & CE-Process Related Services, General Services, and Foundational Premises. The feedback and interactions we received were invaluable and have given us fresh perspectives to incorporate into our project. Beyond presenting, we had the privilege of attending numerous sessions led by esteemed colleagues. Key takeaways included: 🔍 Insight into the latest trends and advancements in information systems for the circular economy. 🤝 Opportunities to network with like-minded professionals. 💡 New perspectives and ideas that have sparked inspiration for the ZirkulEA project. We are pleased to have participated in a dynamic kick-off event for all research projects of the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung funding batch "Development of new digital services for data-based value creation" (#DigiLeistDAT) in Munich, where we were also able to present our joint project #SHAPE. The event brought together a lively community of eleven research projects and many multipliers - with a focus on innovative and sustainable service ecosystems. There were many opportunities for collaboration and exchange.   The #SHAPE project of Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, FIR an der RWTH Aachen, Universität Hamburg and Universität Paderborn aims at designing innovative digital services in ecosystems and promoting collaboration between different actors. Using scalable methods, SHAPE supports SMEs, public institutions and other stakeholders in the development and implementation of innovative data-based services.   A particular highlight of the event was the fishbowl discussion on the challenges of sustainable data-driven value creation. Through direct input from invited speakers as well as workshop participants, key issues related to the sustainable use of data and its value creation were addressed.   This was followed by three intensive workshops that highlighted the changes and developments in business models and discussed how companies can innovatively adapt them, focusing on effective data strategies in ecosystems and their optimal use, as well as on skills development and the design of human-centered work environments and effective learning in the digitalized world of work. There were various detailed overlaps between the projects, which are nevertheless located in very different fields (from medicine and tourism to manufacturing and many approaches in AI) - digital service innovation is a hot cross-cutting topic with high relevance for society, business and research. 💡 The event was an excellent opportunity to gain valuable insights, to network and to work on innovative solutions right from the start of the projects. Last week I had the great opportunity to attend the Circularity Days 2024 in Wolfsburg and present some of our latest findings from the BMBF-funded research project ZirkulEA. 🌍 It was amazing to experience the common spirit between industry and academia to make the automotive and related industries truly sustainable. In many inspiring keynotes and presentations, I was able to learn about individual and joint efforts to produce raw materials sustainably, to design products and production processes effectively for the circular economy, and to close the loop by recycling materials at the end of their life. While it is clear that there is still a long way to go to achieve such a truly circular economy, it is really helpful and inspiring to take this spirit and new contacts back home to our own research efforts. 💡 In my talk, I shared some of our recent research on how ecosystems can effectively share and use data across lifecycle stages and organizational boundaries. In particular, we take a socio-technical approach to illustrate how traceability systems and circular ecosystems need to grow and mature together over time to catalyze circular practices, business models, and supply chains to cope with external drivers of uncertainty. Kürzlich fand in Berlin im Forum Digitale Technologien das 3. Konsortialtreffen von NaiS – Nachhaltige intelligente Sanierungsmaßnahmen statt. Wir verfolgen mit NaiS das Ziel die Nachhaltigkeit und Digitalisierung in der Bauindustrie voranzutreiben. Die Anwendung von neuesten KI-Methoden soll uns dabei helfen, Dokumente maschinen-lesbar zu machen und damit verschiedene Nachhaltigkeitsanalysen durchführen und zirkuläre Sanierungsmaßnahmen ableiten zu können. Das ist vor allem für ältere Gebäude sehr herausfordernd, die jedoch einen großen Teil des Bestands darstellen. Wir konnten als KSRI mit unserem Prototypen zur Grundrisssegmentierung sogar auch erste Hands-On Ergebnisse vorstellen. Natürlich darf auch hier die Interaktion zwischen Nutzer:in und KI nicht fehlen. Die Vorstellung der Ergebnisse wurde sehr positiv aufgenommen und hat interessante Diskussionen angestoßen. Motiviert gehen wir mit diesen Anregungen und neuen Zielen nun in den nächsten Abschnitt des Projektes.
